Batch convert RAW AVI videos for upload to youtube?

I have a bunch of raw AVI files of old family footage (like reel-to-reel footage)

The quality isn't great, but the files are HUGE.
25 minutes = 6GB

Does anyone know of a preferably free tool that would batch convert these files into a format that was:
-smaller (preferably with minimal quality loss... of course. but they're low quality to begin with.)
-easily uploaded to youtube

I think both Handbrake and VLC can do this. Foobar2000 too, perhaps?

VLC is awesome, but it doesn't do batch conversion, to my knowledge. I was hoping to take the 100 or so videos and set them up to convert over a week or however long that might take, unattended.

You could try Super? It's freeware, and does batch conversion.

Check out 'AutoGK' (xvid) or 'Handbrake' (h264). They should both do the job.
