First time to attend such an event. Don't have any idea what kind of present to get for an 13 yo. who is celebrating. Any suggestions?

Pork. It's always appreciated.

If you're uncomfortable giving meat...then find a nice gift made of pigskin.

Especially note the part about a money gift amount being a multiple of 18 (re wikipedia). It's a nice gesture.

This.

A gift (or gift card) in the amount of $18, $36 or $54 (etc.) will make you look very thoughtful, especially given the fact that you are (I assume) not Jewish.

What they said ↑

Also some kids now request that instead of gifts, guests may choose to donate to a specific charity the kid is associated with, as part of their tzedakah projects in prep for their bat/bar mitzvah. The $18 rule would apply there as well, makes it more special.
