Basset Hound / Catahoula Mix - good dog or not?

Looking for a low/no cost puppy *other than shots of course* - and I have happened across a basset hound / catahoula mix.

Will this dog likely be very noisy? We live close to two other neighbors. We have a fenced in backyard, and would put a dog house in it. . .

What would the temperment likely be like?

my buddy has a purebred basset hound and he is loud as all get out

even a bark collar doesn't stop this dog from barking.

IMO, you're looking at a dog whose genetic make up will make it a very "howly" dog.

Just look at the wiki for both breeds and combine them. Its really hard to figure out how a pure breed dog is going to act just from the breed. Its just a best guest. Mutts are usually better dogs.

Why pay for a dog when there are 'free puppies' everywhere? As long as I take them to the vet (which I will do) - why waste money on a 'designer dog' ?

Bassets are great if one likes slobber everywhere.

I've had very good luck with mixed breeds.

I miss interpreted that you were looking for low cost in terms of maintenance.

Just note, along with the need for shots, the puppy may have worms and other issues that will add to your costs.

No, I'm planning to take care of it right. I've waited 10 years to finally get a place where I can have a dog and have a fenced in back yard.

I'm looking for a small medium dog that will have a good docile character. I'm looking for a walking companion and a good dog for my son to be with. I plan on not getting the basset / catahoula based on what was written here and what I read about those two breeds. I'm leaning towards something like a rat terrier size / temperment. . .

I have a blue heeler/australian shepherd mix. Smartest dog I've ever had. Her nickname was lucifer when she was a baby. She became mine at a year and half. It took only ~2 weeks to break her of bad habits.

Oh be prepared for thier nose taking them places they shouldn't. Scent dogs, even with training, will go where ever their nose takes them. Be prepared when taking those kinds of dogs out as they require more attention cus you need to intervene when their nose gets a hold.
