Bass drops out when I switch to 4 channel mode

I've got a set of Klipsch 4.1's which I was previously using on a realtek alc650 and they worked just fine in 4 channel mode. Now I've got a new motherboard with an realtek alc658 (abit av8), I downloaded the latest driver which seems to have some kind of abit skin to it, not sure exactly how it got there because I got it straight from the realtek site, maybe it was uguru... Anyway aside from prettier buttons its the same basic control panel I used to have, except that when I switch to 4 channel mode my sub stops working. Back to 2 channel and everything is normal. It's almost like its going straight to 5.1 and putting the bass on another port or something. Any ideas?

1. Try getting a soundcard. TBSC or Chaintech AV710 would be excelent cheap ones.
2. Disable the 4-channel mode and use a plugin for the player (Foobar2000, FI) to convert to 4 channels.

Well also it might be that you need to set the LFE crossover frequency. Im not familiar with the apps that control that but look for something similiar to it. Also make sure that you are plugging your center channel/sub into the right ports. I had that exact problem wheni plugged it into the wrong port (i didn't plug it into front or rear i plugged it into some digital port that said Rear speakers/ sub on it, on my Asus board).

Also i would try to stay away from onboard audio unless you are using Soundstorm as it has a high load on the CPU and doesn't sound nearly as good as a seperate card or soundstorm.

I have 4.1 not 5.1 speakers, that means there is no center channel and the subwoofer doesn't get it's own channel either. There is a pull down menu in the control panel for 2, 4, and 6 (5.1) sound. 2 channel mode works as expected, 2 front channels and the sub, but 4 channel mode drops the sub for reasons beyond me. I know I should get a soundcard, but I'm strapped for cash and I used basically the exact same codec with these speakers for almost 3 years without a problem so I know this shouldn't be a problem.

Oops my mistake. Still look for something call and LFE crossover frequency.

Dont i feel like a noob for mixing that up.
