Basketball and Political Correctness

I coach my 7 year old son's 7-8 year old basketball team.

Two weeks ago he had a TON of jump balls because my players would sort of freeze when the defense put their hands on the ball. So, this past week, at practice, I taught my team to pull the ball away when another player touches it. I called it "ripping" the ball (That is how I learned it. I don't know what else to call it).

At our game this past weekend, when we had the ball, a defensive player put his hands on the ball and I yelled "rip it!". Apparently, this upset the opposing coach (who said something at the time) and a number of the parents from the other team (which I just learned).

So, I ask you, ATOT, am I wrong or has PC taken over basketball, too? If I was wrong, what should I teach the players to do to prevent a jump ball?

I don't see how there could possibly be anything wrong with that.

My assistant coach just called me. He said that the other team's coach, who he is friendly with, thought "rip it" was "too violent" for 7/8 year-olds.

I am still not sure what else to call it.

yes, 'rip it' sounds violent especially to kids. can you just say 'rainbow it' or 'fluffy bunny' instead? sounds less aggressive

Strip it doesn't even make sense if his team is possessing the ball.

Other coach needs to get over it.

edit: f'ing timewarp.

Watched the pro bowl last night. The whole time I was thinking it what PC run amok would look like if it happened in the NFL. "Don't hit me, Bro."

Whip it, whip it good.

That's just silly. I could understand if you said "rip him!" or something like that, but you didn't, and everyone involved had to know what you were talking about.

My guess is that being PC is just the cover and that it was a bunch of over-competitive parents that just wanted any excuse to complain about something you did.

OP - how about 'pull the ball' as in pull the ball away?

I guess. But the result is the same, no?

I also taught them to yell "MINE!" when they ripped, which had the desired effect of freaking out the other teams players 😉

BTW, we had about 1/3rd of the jump balls from the week before.

Rip it is too violent for 8 year olds? I remember when I was 8. My favorite activity was taking the biggest hammer I could find and putting holes in things that my mother assured me didn't need holes in them. "Rip it" really doesn't seem that violent by comparison. All these parents bitching are the types of people who are going to get us all killed when the animals revolt and no one knows how to defend themselves. "Concerned parent" is just a euphemism for bear food.

I think it's safe to say, we are using the term parents here loosely in every sense of the word.

What a bunch of cry babies.

You've got to be friggin kidding me. That guy should come watch some youth football down here in Texas. It would probably make him curl up in a fetal position.

It was the third game of the season. Both teams were undefeated. The other team had won both their games by 20+ points.

We beat them by 10.

There's the problem. The other coach was pissed about losing. He had to find something to bitch about.

You should now proceed to yell, "CODDLE IT!" - just make sure you let your kids know you mean they should rip it violently from their hands, put the ball on the floor, then rip the opponents head off, dribble it down the court and make a shot.

Then we'll see what they think ...

Well, if they are going to rip their head off, they might as well piss into their dead skull, too, right?

😉
