As I said and you completely skipped, some surprises and darkness would have been a nice touch so I'm not against them in general, but D3 used both as a crutch to prop up the gameplay. Disagree with that statement if you want, but most people will think you're nuts.

Go back and replay the games. The traps in Doom1 and Doom2 are MUCH LARGER. IE: Here is a level from doom2.

- You spawn in a small room with a backpack
- You get the backpack and the room you spawn in collapses into the floor
- You are now in an outdoor environment with 4 pillars and I think a rocket launcher
- When you pick up the rocket launcher the 4 pillars descend into the ground revealing 4 macubuses.
- When the 4th macubus is dead, the outer walls of the area quickly descend into the floor revealing another area full of items and 4 mini masterminds
- End of level after the 4th mastermind drops

As an aside, I believe the traps in Doom1 and Doom2 were also more fun than Doom3. I think that was one of the ultimate failures of Doom3. It took itself too seriously. Doom1 and Doom2 had the graphical ability to display a large number of monsters and they used that ability liberaly with traps.

I think it comes down to this: Doom1, Doom2, and Quake1 were all fast paced gameplay. Somewhere after Quake1, Id lost sight of fast paced gameplay and has entrenched themselves in realism at the extent of making their games less fun. I hope they realize this soon. (This does not mean I think Doom3 was a failure but that I think Quake1 was Id's best work)

Also, Doom1 & 2 were not scary games. Doom3 is. True horror is somewhat of a nitch market. A lot of people don't like being nervous and cautious 24/7 as they play a game.

Actually I think the problem with D3 was that you knew the attack would always come from behind so the "suprise" wasn't really that much of a surprise, and as soon as you knew you had triggered something you would just have to do a 180 degree turn and kill what just spawned in behind you.

And I still think that if the game had FarCry saving method it would be far more scary. (I have the quicksave disease :p)

When I first got D3, I thought it was amazing. It made me very tense, and the ambiance was incredible.

But after a few levels, it became so damn repetitive that the cheap scares flew right past fun and just became irritating. I bought it on launch day, and have yet to finish it... Honestly, with games like Halo 2, Half-Life 2, KOTOR 2, CoD expansion, etc... I doubt I ever will.

just call it like it is . . . Doom iii is a crap game. The first two were classics . . . . this is Carmack/id's Daikatana . . . . the ONLY worthwhile part is it's engine . . . .

and for the last g-damn time, it is NOT scary . . . . :p
(unless "boo" in the dark repeated ENDLESSLY is your idea of "scary")

try Thief - Deadly Shadows, Shalebridge Cradle level to see what SCARY really is. ;)

My sentiments exactly. I mean I don't think it's a crappy game as others are saying. It was pretty incredible the first day you played it. You were like "this is ground breaking." And then after a few hours of playing.....

In my opinion, the programmers blew it. There should have been more down time (instead of looking over your shoulders 24/7). They could have also added more people to interact with. Either that or add some RPG elements like DE or SS2..........Games like DIII make me really go back and appreciate the original DE. I mean DIII was just not worth the wait now that I'm playing it.

That's a little over the top, don't you think, when you consider hardly anybody on these boards liked it much.

I wouldn't say that. Most people I know are fans like me, just don't normally respond to these kind of anti-whatever threads.

You actually liked Doom iii?

:p

What is there to like?

And have you played HL2?

I can't imagine comparing the games . . . . HL2 is a masterpiece contrasting with the muddled stinking dog poo that is Doom iii . . . . the only people that i know that liked doom iii also think "Dawn of the Dead" is great moviemaking (i.e teenage boys) :p)

I think some people were too hyped up in thier expectations and now feel let down? If you look at DOOM III for what it is and for what it was meant to be, I think its a good game. Great engine (does anybody really disagree on this?), good storyline, and if you don't think it's immersive - you just need a better video card and/or speakers.

I've been gaming since the majority of you here on this thread have been in diapers. I don't consider myself a gaming critic, but I can say this: I don't think I can recall a game that made me jump out of my chair before? I mean it's pretty damn scary with headphones on playing in a dark room @ 1:00 in the morning ;) Baahhh, just my .02c.

(BTW: I just watched "Dawn of the Dead"...entertaining, I would't call it great moviemaking either)

Doom iii = "Dawn of the Dead" and Thief III = "The Exorcist" for horror. Except Dawn of the Dead IS entertaining. :p

i had ZERO expectations for Doom iii (except gfx) as i did not play the original/II until after i played thru III.

Doom I and II are fast-paced and FUN(!) . . . . Serious Sam has expanded on this genre with great weapons and hordes of enemies. ;)

OTOH, Diii is SLOW, plodding and BORING . . . . banal. You see the same "boo!" over-and-over in the dark. Then you get a SC weapon that is so overwhelming, i beat the End Boss in One try. :p

Then there is the PDA crap that takes you OUT of the game (actually it was a relief cause the game is such crap, but that should not be the maker's intention) . . . . lack of innovations, stupid "storyline", LINEAR beyond belief, lack of flashlight with gun (it is the future),

By 1/3rd way thru the game, i had the volume on LOW and was just doggedly determined to finish it . . . . scary? - NO!

This game is Carmack's Daikatana. :p

so true. unless you have a really nice surround setup, headphones are the way to go. its just not gonna be scary if you're sprinting and jumping around like an idiot with the lights on and your two speakers on low volume. I haven't even finished the game, but i think it was a terrible idea to put all the lock combinations in those PDA audio files, and the storyline is weak enough that i don't really care what happens in the end. I just think it's only going to scare you if you really want it to, i.e. headphones/lights out/high graphics/no cheating. most people don't even give games a chance, which boggles my mind because most people paid $40-$50 for it.

Compare it to HL2 (try *contrast*) and it falls short in EVERY way. ;)

A 'throw-away' game.

not everyway at all. the game sucked. but character modelling and shadow implementation is better than half life 2. but hl2 is a much, much better game. doom 3 did somethings brilliantly, and still better than any other game, unfortunately, those things are merely technology-wise.

i have a very nice surround sound system, a 19" CRT and a decent gaming system. Even TRYING to like the POS know as Doom iii was IMPOSSIBLE for me. . . . i didn't even look at a walkthrough (what need? it is SO linear) or a cheat. BTW, that Soul Cube IS a stupid "built-in cheat" - "Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill. . . use us" - BAH!

Doom iii is a turkey. If you want real "scares" and a story that will give you nightmares, try Thief III (esp. shalebridge cradle level) . .. at least these developers know how to create suspense. . . . HL2 is better in EVERY way . . . there is NO excuse for the crap known as Doom iii . . .

i DID say (earlier) EXCEPT the gfx. ;)

who wants to pay $50 for a pretty (gory) engine demo. Where the Hell is the gameplay?

I sold my Diii copy the day i finished it and the garbege is OFF my HD.:|

Yes I liked Doom 3. Yes, I've played HL2, which is also a great game. I've played Thief 3 which again is a great game, though I don't believe that it should be compared to D3/HL. It's like comparing Resident Evil to Metal Gear Solid, just because they have similar interfaces.

I didn't think Dawn of the Dead was a great movie. I also didn't think it was a complete waste of time. It's mindless entertainment. I didn't watch it thinking that this was some groundbreaking stuff, nor did I watch it going this much get an oscar. I watched it to see people die very messy. Which is also one of the reasons that I liked D3, to make things die messy.

Run through, kill things, rinse, repeat. Take it for what it is.

i do take it for what it is . . . . banal :p

Serious Sam is a similar genre - but at least there is a "fun" factor. Doom iii is SLOW &TEDIOUS - nothing at all like its predecessors . . . .
