Basicly, Doom3 is Unfair

As others have noted the repetitiveness of D3, it is also unfair because it is does not give the player in single play an even chance against the enemies. (1) they come out of shadows and darkness and the switching of flashlight and weapons is gimmicky, and (2) enemies attack frequently from behind with little notice or warning.

If you were a demon from hell trying to kill a marine, would you give him a warning and attack him from the front?

No, I'd stand silently in a broom closet for days waiting for someone to walk past 😉

Lucky for you, since you're a demon you don't have to worry about eating or drinking and can wait around as long as necessary.

You have to have good headphones and/or a good soundcard/soundsystem. If you pay attention you can hear most every monster. And you always have to be ready, quick reactions will save you.

or what? do you expect the monsters standing around and talking to each other like the moronic enemies in a game like Far Cry?

Seriously dude, Doom 3 isn't that hard. Try a lower difficulty level if you're having trouble.

Not monsters but I'd certainly expect people (mercs) to do so.

That duct tape mod is so lame to me. Kills one of the more unique aspects of the game. All I did was bound mouse2 to the flashlight and I never had a problem.

to each their own though.

Agree 100%. The basic ingame flashlight was a huge aspect to me. Especially that level where you had to follow the lighted corpse. That part was insanely spooky ingame. When you put your flashlight down and got away from the corpse it was pitch black.

I believe that's the point of the game. I jumped a few times playing it, which is something that rarely, if ever happens. Perfectly content with my copy and plan on getting the expansion! And like others I just ran around with my flashlight on until a monster came out then I'd quickly switch to a weapon. Really not that hard.

basically Doom III is . . . . stupid and boring (and easy). 😛

Compare it to HL2 (try *contrast*) and it falls short in EVERY way. 😉

A 'throw-away' game.

You dont like shooting mercs in the side of the head? I know I like getting the drop every once in a while 😉

I don't know why everyone doesn't like Doom 3, you bunch of pussies....

play it on uber hard, or don't play it at all..

It is meant to scare you, and it sure as damn will sometimes

I said unfair.

Why all the darkness? It seems that that is all what Doom 3 is about - killing the boogie man that's hiding in the dark. Doom3 is a game to permit a child's revenge.

When a player has cleared a room or space of enemies, he shouldn't have to cover his back. If the designers insist on this sneaky kind of game, they should have allowed players a way to clear out those closets as well before moving on.

FWIW, I agree. I just finished playing CoD before starting D3 and I felt the same way. It--the pitch darkness and surprise monsters--constantly reminded me I was in a game built by programmers who had things attacking from totally irrational locations JUST to try to give me a challenge or scare. I did not feel immersed in the game like I had in CoD. I didn't feel challenged, because once you realize you need to turn around every ten feet and probably fire into any dark open areas you come upon, it gets routine and tedious.

Having limited amounts of it would have been an excellent touch, but, as it is, it's just ad noseum.

SHUT UP :|
If you're complaining about monsters coming out of nowhere, you obviously never played Doom or Doom 2... which, in my opinion, means you should never have bought Doom 3. THEY'RE CALLED FSKING BOOBYTRAPS. The Doom WAD editors showed them great, it was a specific line or location you walked over that triggered a wall to open or whatever. It's part of the game, it's part of the reason why the first 2 were and still remain classic.

I played and finished Doom. That was back when I was using a 486, but I don't recall any surprise from-behind attacks anywhere near the scale of D3's. As I said and you completely skipped, some surprises and darkness would have been a nice touch so I'm not against them in general, but D3 used both as a crutch to prop up the gameplay. Disagree with that statement if you want, but most people will think you're nuts.

Q: No, seriously, why is this being discussed? Especially now?

A: Cause not everybody bought it the day it came out.
A: Cause not everybody could imediatly put a finger on why they didn't like it.
A: Cause gameplay design decisions have no statute of limitations.
