Where would be the best place to learn about the basics of laptops? A good site maybe, or just a place to start looking to buy a laptop at...any help would be appreciated. I am looking for a somewhat basic one around $1200, I will only use it for music, the internet and college and watching movies so thats about it.

By "basics of laptops", do you mean reviews/user recommendations? This is a good place to look, if you search around, there are undoubtably many threads that are devoted to people like you looking for a laptop in that price range. If you have a few in mind and want user opinions, you can check out places like epinions. For $1200, you could get a pretty nice one from Dell. Check out the Hot Deals forum to see if there are any specials right now. Good luck!

Not sure of any good place for laptop reviews. You might want to try zdnet for reviews. Sony's typically have the best displays, but lack on video card and other components.

The one thing I didnt mention was that it weighs 7 lbs which seems like kind of a lot.

Notice that the laptop you linked to does not have an internal battery. What good is that? It also is most likely running a desktop Pentium 4 processor.

DUDE, get a Dell.... We have some Dell laptops at work and from everything I've put them through, they're a pretty good investment. Hope it helps.

at first, 7lbs might not seem a lot. But once you carry it 3x a day or so, you will start to notice that it is a big drag. The lighter it is, the better. You said your gonna use it for college, so you need to consider your bookbag when you buy a laptop. My bookback, having a calculus book, physics book, etc should already be enough to pull me down; now add an extra 7 pounder computer, and I think you will definately regret it. Not to mention carrying it duirng the summer heat!!
