Hi everyone. I've tried to research this basic setup, but I'm still confused. My main desktop PC is connected to my cable modem. It runs Windows XP SP2. My son has a laptop with wifi that runs Wndows Vista Business Edition. What do I need to do to allow them both to have access to the internet at the same time (the laptop from a remote location in the house)?

Also, my desktop motherboard is an Intel D975XBX2 with a "Gigabit ethernet LAN controller with RJ-45 connector". What is this used for?

Thanks for your help!

all you really need is a wireless router that you would connect between the cable modem and your desktop computer. Your son would connect wirelessly to the router with his laptop (if it has an internal wireless car, which most new laptops do). You can just go to Bestbuy, circuit city, etc and get a decent router there. With just two computers and a cable modem you do not need anything too fancy unless either you or your son uses bittorrent

Also, to note about your gigabit ethernet LAN connector, this just means it supports a faster connection speed. However, unless you are using a wireless router with built-in gigabit connections, it's nothing to worry about. I don't want to get into details and confuse you, so bottom line is it supports a faster connection speed, but in reality it's just a 'plus' feature. It supports every other speed as well so it will work with any router you use.

vorgusa is right, go to a local electronics store and pick up your router. just let them know you would like to connect your home desktop PC and a wireless laptop to the internet. They will hook you up!

Be sure you at least pick up a wirelss b/g router. You'll see what I mean when you get there. You could get the newer wireless 'N' routers, but honestly if it's more expensive, don't bother. I dont' care how they try to seel it to ya.
