basic h/d question

I have a failing 3.2gb 33 seagate h/d and am looking to replace but, it may sound basic but can I use a 66 or 100 h/d, what is the difference. Will any h/d be recognised, can anyone suggest a stable 20gb at good value at the moment.

Thanks

As long as your BIOS will support the new drive you can use any IDE drive. All ATA66/100 drives are backward compatible with ATA33. As for a cheap, reliable drive, I woulde go with Maxtor. Their new 7200RPM drives are a great value. Check the Hot Deals forum for where to get some deals on these drives.

you may want to check your local staples store. I think they have 15 GB Maxtor 5400RPM ATA-66 drives on sale for $50 after rebate.

I have to give Maxtor the nod, I just bought my third drive and have been pleased with each and every one of them. Can't beat the quality, especially for the price.

And I forgot, if your MoBo doesn't support ATA66/ATA100, you can buy a fairly inexpensive PCI card and add that support to your system.

Here's the info on the card. If you buy a 30gb 7200 RPM drive or larger...

MAXTOR will send you a rebate check for 50 bucks, making the ATA100 card FREE.

You should be able to find the 30gb drive at Staples for $119.99, then apply one of the coupons from your favorite deal site and you will have yourself more storage than you ever knew what to do with. Mav.

Check out the Maxtor 7200rpm Diamond Max Plus Series of HD's. The are a good value, benchmark great, and have a no-qibble 3 year full warranty.
