Basic filter sets for Netgear rt314

Anyone have any links to or know any basic filter sets for the Netgear router rt314?

Not sure I am setting mine up properly and would like something to kinda go by

Below are some links to get you started. Keep in mind that you must build your filters to fit what you do with your computer and the applications you use. It almost never works to just adopt filters that someone else has written for their setup, you must write your own. There is not a lot out there to teach you how to this and that makes it even tougher. However, if you can successfully do this you add a degree of protection to your network that you wouldn't have otherwise. If I can figure it out anyone can so don't give up.......😉

Make sure you check out both the Netgear Manual and the Zyxel P314 Manual as both have different information on building filter sets.

One last note. I highly recommend Zyxel firmware over Netgear's because the Zyxel version offers some nice features not offered with the default Netgear version. Make sure you check to see what BootBase is installed on your RT314. If you have BootBase 2.x you will not be able to do this. If you get to this point you will know exactly what I am talking about.

Too bad about the BootBase.🙁 Inspite of this small set back, you're still ok. Go ahead and upgrade to the latest Netgear firmware. Everything in the Zyxel firmware eventually makes it into the Netgear firmware. Go with version 3.22 as 3.24 appears to have some flakey problems with it.
One bit of advice, if you choose to upgrade your firmware by sending it via ftp as "ras" make sure you ftp in the "rom-0" file also. This will effectively reset everything back to default settings within the router and you will have to set it back up again. You may wonder, "Why do that?" The reason is because doing this completes the firmware upgrade. If you look through the forums here you will find where some have had strange problems after flashing their router's firmware Some of us believe this is due to not sending the "rom-0" file after flashing the firmware. The point is to follow the instructions in the Netgear manual as there is a reason for doing it the way they say to. 😎
 
yes.. noticed some funky things already..

I went to 3.24 before I saw your last post. seems to have some problems with the Browswer interfact... Mainly it won't let me log in unless I reboot the router lol. Not to mention the menu's are a bit broke at times.

I may decide to flash back to 3.22...And yes.. I flashed the rom-0 also as it was recommended somewhere else also.

I am willing to help you any way I can. This is all fresh in my mind since I went through all this, including configuring my filter sets, just a few weeks ago. What you are doing is not discussed here on Anandtech Forums very frequently it seems.
One other thing I just thought of. I am using a logging daemon from this site. This proved to be a very useful tool when configuring my filter sets. I am not sure if this is supported with the Netgear 3.22 firmware but it may be. Since I am at work, I can't telnet in to tell you exactly what to look for. However, you seem somewhat versed in what you're doing so you should be able to figure out if this option is indeed supported. If you can, you will find this to be a useful tool.
 
I have a Zyxel P310 (I got it as a beta tester for Zyxel) and
the bios/firmware is great (ole school). Many users like the web
interface but I still like good ole telnet!

Like sharkb8 said, make sure you check out Zyxel's site, they have tons
of info on their filter sets. It will drive you nuts. 😉



 
read so much about filter sets for today that my eyeballs are spinning lol

I wish the Zyxel firmware was interchangeable with 2.x bootbase.

Oh well... Life goes on..a few more adjustments and a few minor changes and I think (knock on wood) I am set 🙂
