Basic DV software with Win98SE support?

A friend needs me to install a firewire card so that his son can offload videos from his DV camera (a christmas present). The firewire card did not come with any software and I don't think that the camera did either. I know that the system will be painfully slow for video encoding tasks, but I told them that it would be alright if it does such tasks overnight (compressing video). Adobe Premiere Elements requires Windows XP. Is there another basic application I can recommend that will install on Windows 98? Perhaps something free or open-source?
