Basic dsl installation question

This is probably so simple but I'm concerned that getting on the internet will be a frustrating experience (as it has in the past).

I'm building a new rig with xp home. It will replace my other system which also has xp home. The other system is currently hooked up to sbc dsl (not sbc yahoo though, bandwidth isn't limited)) through a linksys router, which it shares with my girlfriends xp home computer. It is working fine. So my question is what should I expect in terms of swapping the old rig for the new one. Are there some things I should write down prior to disconnecting the existing computer? It's been years since I had to set up dsl and I vaguely remember needing numbers and stuff. I don't have any documentation from sbc and would greatly desire to not have to call their support people.

It would be really lame of me if I can build a computer from scratch but can't get it connected to the internet

Thanks.

It sounds as if the router should currently be holding all the important information and any computer hooked up to it via lan should work without doing anything special.

(Ignore quotes in commands)
Start - Run - CMD - "ipconfig /all"
If DHCP is enabled then you will be ok to just plug the new rig in. If not then in the same cmd window do:
"ipconfig /all > c:\network.txt" This will output the settings you need for your network to a txt file in the c drive so you can use all the same details on the second pc except the ip address. For the second pc add 1 to the last segment of the ip address eg: (First PC) 192.168.1.10 --> (Second PC) 192.168.1.11

Hope this helps :)

Thanks. DHCP is not enabled.

The text file has my ip ending with a single digit eg. ...1.6. Would I make it ...1.61 or ...1.7?

BTW, where on my new computer will I do all this (fill in the information). Thanks.

warpigeon,
are you able to check your email (sbc, yahoo) when you go through the router ?
Dont know what I did wrong but if I go thru the router (Dlink), i cannot check my email.
By that I mean actually see the email, I can log in to my email account ok but when I click on Inbox folder or anyother folder ... nothing happen.
I can still attach files brownsing around 'My Yahoo' but cannot check email ???
Other than that, I can surf the net like normal ...
But if I take the router out of the loop ... everything is fine !

The problem is the SBC modem only have one ethernet out ...
I did call the 'no help' line and they suggest that I use the USB connection ^*$*$%^

Right now I connect them all wirelessly to avoid that problem but it still bugs me as hell to what happen ?

If E-mail works but Internet does not then either the Gateway or DNS setting is wrong.

Check to see what it says for those two, most of the time they should be the same.
