basic cheap video editing?

I'm capturing TV with a leadtek xp2000.

i am using mpg2 files at 640*480, but can use mpg1 if there's a reason to do so (new at this so have no idea why to use which)

all is want to do is grab a 5 minute section from one of these files or possibly just remove some commerials.

any tips on what editog software to use?

this is all i need to do, so basic is good.

thanks!

the software that came with the leadtek (ulead video studio 6) can do this. not sure what os you're running but the freeware "virtualdub" (google for it) can be used to excise commercials.

If you have XP then you have the option of the moviemaker.....although I'm not sure I like the interface of version 2 over version 1 but you could give it a go....it outputs to WMV....very quick and small.

Am using XP so I tried Movie Maker and it's not too bad, BUT it keeps crashing on these 30 minute mpg files.

Something similar with a slightly better interface that doesn't crash would would be perfect.

Any reason why I wouldn't want things in WMV format?
