The scouts are free to refuse atheist and gay boys from their organization, and I am free to refuse to support an organization that discriminates against my child. I just wish the schools here were like we had down in Davis CA, where they did not allow the scouts to freely recruit during school. It's hard for a kid when they're put in the position of having to explain why they are unwelcome in an organization their friends participate in.

edit: speeeling

So they actively enforce those regulations? Do they refuse membership to atheists? If so, I would tend to agree with these suits. Government should not support discriminatory organizations.

Whether some individual troops chose to ignore the rules regarding the "no atheist" ban doesn't matter to me. The BSA as a national organization has chosen to take an extremely strong stand regarding it, and I think it would be wrong for me as a parent to allow my child to participate, even in a local troop that doesn't enforce it.

I am rather active with Scouting - I just got my eagle not a year ago (just turned 18). I am also far closer to an atheist than any of the other major religions, and I have not come up against any scruples because of it.

The last point in the scout law is Reverent...
Respecting and practicing your beliefs and respecting those of others.

The Boy Scouts do not require that their member believe in God.

the require that the members believe in a higher power...

That could be God, Allah, Budda, or Nature... or anything! As long as it is a higher power than themselves.

And as far as Gays in the Boy Scouts go... they really have a 'don't ask, don't tell" policy. I know this to be true. What they don't want is openly gay members and leaders going on outings and camping trips telling all the little boys how great it is to be gay.

:)

Yeah, because we all know that every gay person has to recruit a certain number of new gays each year. I'm surprised they don't go door-to-door like the LDS folks.

Fausto opinion evidently didn't agree with one user's FACTS, so he deleted them.

I still don't see how that contradicts my post above. We need PR&N. :p

Exactly, which is why there are troops in India and other countries which are not Judeo / Christian centric.
The ACLU is trying to keep PUBLIC funds from supprting a PRIVATE organization which has it's own criteria for membership, some of which are exclusive of a minority of people.
I think it's narrow minded of the ACLU to continue this Quioxte- esque battale, but it's their time and money and reputation that they put at risk.
There is a need and a place for both organizations in our society. It's unfortunate that the ACLU wants to pit themselves against the Boy Scouts in this manner. I would prefer they go after greater, more insidious evils.

Hmm.. I'm not religous nor are my parents and I was a scount (achieved eagle). I don't remember having any issue with god in scouts. The only time it came up was during the oath, but god is in the pledge of allegiance. Wasn't an issue with me, but I suppose there are some bored people in this world that feel that life as we know it will be over if the government supports the boy scouts. If thats the case then just call them a religous organization and give them the same rights as a church :)

i love how the ACLU will pick and choose which of the bill of rights they choose to defend.

they will never defend the 2nd amendment.

Don't forget that when the court told them they could discriminate against gays, they also lost their tax exempt status.

Sorry, paint me as a left wing liberal nut, but times are changing. If the old institutions of America can't accept that, then they have to be razed the ground. Let's hope the ACLU brings an end the boyscouts in my lifetime.
