Baseball Cards: Organizing Them for Autographs--HOW!?

Hi all...

I have collected baseball cards for a long time now and I have cards spanning back into the mid and late 80's through present date. I am getting into autographed memorabilia and I would really like to use baseball cards to get autographed at baseball games by the players as I like having a pic, stats and everything a card has to offer but with an autograph I personally got on the card.

My question is: how should I best organize by card collection so that I can easily grab the cards I need and put them into a binder to take with me to games to get signed? I don't want to have to go through every card in my collection before every game--that's not worth it! And another idea is to put all the cards together by what team the player is on on the card, but the teams change every year and most of the older cards have players on them which are no longer on those teams.

I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks I should do or what they do...

Thanks!! :D

So, are you saying organize all of my cards in boxes by the teams that are ON THE CARD or the CURRENT TEAM the player is on RIGHT NOW?

Teams change a lot over the years...

And would you put them in boxes or binders? I have a ton of cards and will be buying more of course...

teams is the best way... unless you want to hire some professional filer or something to follow you around. it's not that hard really, you should arrange them alphabetically, then when you go to a game, look up what the players are, then pull them from the set.

So, are you saying organize them by team and then alphabetically within each team? And is this by the team on the card or the player's current team?

Alphabetically is a good idea...

By the teams they're on now. Makes it easier when you're watching them play in a game... now.

gopunk: I like that idea! Thanks!

Zakath15: The only problem I have with that is I would have to update all of the teams whenever there are trades and that would be a pain since I'd have to continuously following every little trade and move a team makes... it just sounds like a lot of work to me, don't ya think? ;)

I need to figure out what to do with all my baseball cards. They've been collecting dust in my closet for years.
I have a '84 Wade Boggs I think and a Topps Sammy Sosa rookie card buried in there too. I got a whole buttload of unopened early 90's wax packs as well. Where do I go to get rid of that stuff? Baseball card stores are extinct over here.

the vast majority of early 90's cards aren't worth too much unfortunately, i have a buttload of them :p

oh btw, since there seem to be a few collectors, have you guys seen the Topps Archives Best Years cards? i'm bought a pack a few weeks ago and fell in love... i'm going to buy a box as soon as this quarter is over :)

gopunk: I ahve a few more questions about how you do yours alphabetically too...

1. Do you organize them simply by, "all the 'A's' here, 'B's' here" or do you completely organize them alphabetically? Like Aaron before Andrews?

2. Do you put them all in boxes or binders?

3. If you put them in boxes, do you use some sort of tabs to see where different letters start?

amnesiac 2.0: You send the unopened packs to me ;) LOL :D

Thanks guys!

i do them in full alphebetical order, then under each player, under chronological order, then for each year, under alphabetical for brand and subbrand, then if there are subsets or something, i do it by card number. no, i do not have ocd :p

i put them all in cardboard boxes, the kinds especially made for cards. binders are too hard to do when you need to insert cards. i have a bunch of clear boxes laying around, but i'm kind of paranoid of the light hitting them.

yea, i have some tabs. i was like 10 when i made them. not sure that i would have the patience to make them if i was doing it today :p

It sounds like a good idea to me! It would take some time to put it all together at first, but I think it's the way to go!

Thanks! I have tons of cardboard boxes for cards around... that's what most of mine are in anyway...

One more thing... do you keep your "good" cards in binders (ie: players u like, nice cards, good players, etc.) or do those go in the boxes too?

yea, it's probably not something you want to undertake if you're really pressed for time... i was a little kid when i did all this, so i had that advantage :p

nope, i put them all in the same lot... i used to have protective sleeves and whatnot, but i decided it was too much of a hassle. especially since some cards' values fluctuated. i just gave up... i don't touch or look at them that often anyways, so the protective sleeves would sort of be useless.

for years i tried to put them all in an access database, but that just never got completed, because i have so many damn cards.

Ya, a database sounds like a pain to me! I'd never buy another box of cards, LOL :D

The cheap plastic sleeves are an idea though... but that's still a lot of little sleeves... ;)

yea... now that i think about it though, if you have some really valuable cards that are already in some kind of protection, i woudln't bother removing them. all you're doing is risking damaging them in the removal process... better safe than sorry :)

Yeah, I wouldn't touch the high-value cards I have that are in screw down protectors... I was just talking the cards that I have in my binder... I think I will pull those though. Most of my expensive cards are football cards, unfortunately... I had a year or so when I collected football cards and got a bunch of good cards, but I still have lots more baseball cards, hehe.... like 7 times more :D
