BartPE - XP bootdisk that runs entirely from CD

It has been out for quite some time now. There are other threads about it. Many have tried it.

Ah, didn't realize that. I did a search for "BartPE" but it turned up nothing.

Hold up. So, this is a full XP Environment to boot to? (Obviously not with full functionality.) But like Knoppix?

If so, this would be very sweet to use for troubleshooting. Nice!

I already love Knoppix for this reason. (But, my Linux skills still blow.)

I used it a little bit to try and fix my bad Windows installation... works pretty well from my experience!

Yes, you can use it for troubleshooting. You can set it up to include anti virus and spyware detector. There are many applications that have plug-ins that allow you to include them in the install.

According to the author, there is a similar CD from Microsoft that is only offered to someone who has a degree from Microsoft or something like that. The author liked it and created this for everyone.

Yup, but practically full functionality. The PE supposedly stands for "Preinstallation Environment" but it also provides networking.

That's exactly what it's for.

This would replace Knoppix for you. It allows you to read and write to your hard drives, obiously including NTFS drives, if you can't get Windows to boot. It allows you to rescue your critical files and move or copy them to a network share.

Unlike Knoppix, you don't download an ISO. You need a full XP or 2K install CD, as PE Builder uses your own copy of XP or 2K to build Bart's PE.

After looking at this program, it seems perfect for a rescue and troubleshooting disc. You can find good AV and anti-spyware plugins for it but the only thing I couldn't find was a plugin for a firewall program. I was wondering if the basic Bart PE uses the Windows SP2 firewall or not, and if not, has anyone come across a firewall plugin that works?

Thanks for the answers! Yeah, I have an XP Install CD. Awesome, will try creating this tomorrow.

Thanks again.

I'd advise using an XP CD with SP2 slipstreamed into it if you can.

Yup, got one. (Finally created thanks to Auto-Streamer.)

Hello ALL:

I just tried BartPE and it is version 313. I put in a slipstreamed XP-Pro SP2 and all seems OK, but it dies saying there is an access error...

Error: CopyFile "D:\i386\setupreg.hiv" to "C:\pebuilder313\setuphiv" returned error 5: Access is denied.

Any idea what I am doing wrong? Drive D: is my XP CD and I tried to just save as an ISO instead of burning directly to CD but it did not matter.

Nope. A xp-pro with sp2 slipstreamed. CD works fine to install XP, but will not let me make bartpe. Should I just be able, as a test, to put Xp in cd and tell it to make ISO file? I did not select any plugins...just wanted to see if I could create the CD. I did an ISO file as the write to CD does not even get that far.

Look at the BartPE\troubleshooting section - are you trying to build BartPE using a Dell OEM cd?
