Barton overclocking problem

I have an ASUS A7N8X-X motherboard, and a Barton 2800+ CPU. I want to run the CPU at a 200 MHz fsb to match my pc3200 ram. So I changed the voltage from 1.65 to 1.7, and set the multiplier at 10.5 x 200, then tried rebooting, the monitor won't pick up a signal, and I have to flip the power switch off, restart, and set the settings back. Any ideas as to how I can overclock this to a 200 MHz fsb? thanks 🙂 I don't want to increase the MHz by much, because I have a slight cooling issue.

so what you're saying is its LOCKED at 12.5?

EDIT: o haha, I didn't damage anything if i'm still talking to you did I? 😛

Well, I really wish people told me that before they TOLD me to get pc3200 RAM for overclocking  THANKS A LOT! Oh well, at least I can re-use the RAM in an Athlon 64 rig, should I ever upgrade.

Did you mention that you were going to use a 2800+ desktop cpu to overclock with?

can't you run them async nadh ave the ram at 400 mhz
Yes, but 333fsb and 400ram are slower on nF2 than 333synch due to the latency hit that chipset suffers from running asynch.

Oh yeah dude just flip out over nothing why don't you. PC3200 RAM costs the same if not less than PC2700, and is much more future-proof.

OK, I'm over the ram, sorry 😱 my timings are at pc2700 anyway, but how come in the newegg reviews, people say they overclocked their 2800+'s?

Older unlocked CPU or just fsb overclocking. You can set it to expert in the bios and set the ram to 100%, boost you CPU voltage a bit, then start boosting the fsb 5mhz at a time until you reach the stable limit of your chip. boost the voltage a bit more and go again. Tweak and tweak until you find the max stable fsb your chip will do with a voltage of 1.85v or less *good cooling required* and be content with where it stops since it'll be faster clockspeed and system bandwidth while maintaining synch mode to keep performance optimal.

DAPUNISHER, or someone who has been here in this situation before me 🙂 I need a crash course on overclocking terminology

THANKS! OK, I went into my BIOS, set my fsb to user defined, raised it to 170 from 166, told the RAM to go by SPD, and it worked! I'm running 2.13 GHz now, is this the correct way to do it?

EDIT: and ram and fsb are synced, this is nifty, I can't wait to do this a lil more and see how much my 3dmark01 score goes up by 🙂

Why not? If he put real voltage though it I bet he could. Try 2.1.

Oh I sould put some kind of disclaimer here. This may damage your chip over time and lessen longevity. And you better have the best air cooling or water.

my mobo is a constant 30-31', my CPU when overclocked at 175 x 12.5 is 47' C, and the diode is 53' C all at idle. After playing unreal 2k4 online for about 20 minutes, nothing ever goes above 60' C. The diode tops out at 58, and the cpu tops out at 53. 🙂 This is with an Arctic Cooling Copper Silent 2M, silicone compound, and a 2800 RPM fan.

OK, I ran 3dmark01, got only 200 points higher, so I just put the CPU back to normal, but thank you all for helping me out, I now know that I now CAN tinker with my CPU if I want to. Thanks 🙂

what I would do it go over to SVC.com get your self a slk 947 for 19.99 get a good 92mm fan. then crank your voltage to 1.85 and see how far you can bump the fsb up. thiers a chance to get it to 2.5ghz which would be a 200fsb

or you should atleast hit 185-192 which would get you 2.3-2.4 ghz

I'll try that once I get some AS5 and winter rolls around 🙂
the heatsink is $45 retail price, now at $20 only at svc.com .. i would buy now.. i got one with the zalman 92 mm fan

You could probably sell your 2800+ and get a mobile 2500+ without losing more than $10. There are plenty of chaps out there that don't overclock.
