Barton OC Question

Hey I have a question about overclocking a Barton 2500.
I'm really strapped for cash and was wondering if I'd be able to run it at FSB 400 with the stock heatsink + fan and using 512mb PC3200 Kingston Valueram

By running it I mean it would be rock steady and medium-low temperature so I don't fry the chip

- If not plz recommend a cheap effective Heatsink + fan and Good ram suitable for what I want to do.

Most likely you'll be OK but you may have to up the v's a tad and slow the RAM timings...Only guarantees for any speed is to purchase the appropriate Hardware meant to run at it's setting.
 
I have a similar setting except heatsink and fan. I'm using SLK947U and panaflo 80mm fan for cooling. Never used a stock heatsink so I don't know the performance of a stock heatsink.
With aggressive setting for Kingston value ram, I could hit 2.3Ghz (11*210). But I settled down to 2.26 (11*205) for stability. My temp is around 47C when loaded with 1.725 volt.
Of course, 2.2Ghz (3200+) can be done with stock volt and temp was around 42C when loaded. I don't think you would have any problem to get 2.2Ghz.

XP3200's come with the exact same heatsink as XP2500's. Assuming you don't require a voltage increase to run 200x11, the retail heatsink will work perfectly fine. Even if you do require a voltage increase, it should still be fine. AMD's retail heatsinks are not the junk they were in the days of the Athlon 1.0-1.4's and the early Athlon XP's. They're pretty high quality now, many are even copper heatsinks with what looks like maybe a nickel plating. However, I believe the most recent ones are aluminum heatsinks with a piece of copper screwed to the bottom. Well... maybe not anymore, but last July when I got my week 24 XP2500, that's the type that came with that.

Tnx for the help gus. I'm pretty much a newbie to overclocking...
So all I do is change the FSB to 200 in bios then it'll read my CPU as an athlon 3200? (11 x 200)
Also will I need to change any memory timings or voltage settings and if so how do I do that?

Yes and if you have to change the Mem Timings it will be in the BIOS, most likely uder Advanced Settings (Higher #'s is Slower)...just cruise through the BIOS as it will help educate you and Read or download this

Once I OC that processor, what temperature is it gonna run at and will that cause any problems for durability etc.
- If it will, should I get another Heatsink and if so which one?
- Also will I need a good case with extra fans mounted on for ventilation or can I take the case I have now. (Generic with 1 80 mm fan) If so, plz recommend a good cheap case.

Best case for the money, by far: Antec SLK3700AMB, best heatsink for the money: Speeze FalconRock, best memory for the money: Kingmax PC3500 or Buffalo Tech. PC3200. For that case, which comes with a very decent power supply, you'll need to buy one more 120mm fan, because it only comes with one. Here's the link to the cheapest 120mmx25mm fan available: Speeze 120mm fan for $3.49. Oh, and the reason you will probably need to buy a better cooler than the stock AMD hsf is that the newest XP2500's are requiring huge amounts of voltage to make it to 200mhz fsb. The people who are using stock hsf's to run at 11x200 have the older 2500's, some of which were able to do 11x200 at stock voltage.
