Barton Mobile XP2500 - Not working

I just got my new processor in the mail, and ever time I boot my computer up, it locks up, at the same point. I don't know a great deal about processor setup, and I'm hoping someone here will be able to help me out.

My specs:
AMD XP2500+ barton mobile 266mhz FSB
MSI KT4V mobo - supports 200, 266, and 333mhz FSB
1024megs DDR333mhz ram - this is where the problem probably lies
GEforce 4 Ti4200 128meg

Everything in the bios is at it's defaults. I have tried a variety of FSB/multiplier combinations, and always the same thing.

The place it locks up at is a part of my boot sequence which I have only seen on my computer. Normally, for about 3 seconds it sits at a screen that says "Press <Esc> to view start menu." (or something VERY similar). With this processor it locks up, however it almost seems like it doesn't. After Menu, it has an underscoree, blinking. It keeps blinking, but nothing seems to work at that point, except that power switch =D.

Anyway, I hope someone knows a way to resolve my problem. Thanks in advance.

Does that board have a POST code output to read? If so, check what the error code means in the manual. Have you tried using onely one DIMM, or tried using only one DIMM from a known working computer? Tried using a different DIMM slot? Can you get into the bios; can you load some fail-safe defaults? Are you trying to overclock? Are all your cables plugged in securely?

I know a few people who had problems with mobile cpu's because they had the cpu voltage set as default or auto. Try setting the cpu voltage manually via bios to something like v1.55 or v1.60 etc to see if that fixes your problem.

Can anyone explain voltage to me, relating to processors? It's something I don't understand. However, I haven't looked into it either.

Crimson:
-I don't know if it can output any kind of code, to show what's wrong
-I haven't tried using one stick of ram (I have 2), nor have I moved it around
-The computer I am typing this up on is the same computer I am trying to get this new processor into. I have a xp2000+ at 266mhz FSB in it atm (a really crappy one).
-Everything is at "fail-safe" defaults, otherwise known as "Auto"
-I tried overclocking. However the processor started clocked as low as it could go (100mhz x13.5 - I guess that's not as low as it can go, but it's lower than it's tested at)
-Damn it! I didn't have my fan plugged in! (just kidding)

I'm going to try the volrage thing, but the thought of changing the voltage scares me a little. I need to understand it to feel comfortable with it.

The reason why I'm not acting on this faster is because I bought city of heroes the same day I got the processor. I want to play it!

sounds like a dud...

try raising the voltsage to 1.65 which is the default for non mobile bartons and is perfectly safe.

Check and make sure your HS/fan is on properly. Maybe it is locking up from heat due to having the fan on backwards or tilted on the socket step.

It's a volcano 9 (i think 9)... I can't detach the fan from the heatsink.

I'm going to try this sucker out again. Try everyones ideas. I really don't want to have to swap in my old one, again.

Okay!
I tried the voltage at all the settings I am allowed.
Auto, 1.55, 1.575, 1.6, 1.625, 1.65
I tried all three of my ram slots with a single chip
Still isn't working.

I got this annoying situation. I have a friend who knows his stuff about this sort of thing. I've asked him in the past when I am having a problem with my computer, and every single time his answer is something regarding me not caring about my computer or I have something set up incorrectly (I keep everything at default). I think he's got a problem with the fact that I leave my computer at it's defaults, and don't optimize or overclock. Anyway, in every single case his response is something like this.
In this case he did the exact same thing. He said it was because I didn't even look into this processor first, and that I didn't buy one which would work well with my computer. This may be true, but I don't believe it's the reason for it not working. He thinks that because I have 333mhz ram, a 266mhz processor, and whatever mhz video ram, they're having a problem. What he doesn't know, is that my old processor was 266 as well. He doesn't care, it seems the only thing he's truly trying to prove is my lack of caring. Or he's trying to show me that I have to care for my computer to turn on... or something. I was really stubborn and told him he couldn't try to fix it, because of the way he acted. There is a good chance he could fix it (assuming it's not pooched in the first place), but I know it wouldn't have anything to do with the speeds of everything on my computer.

well one your friend is partially correct. why in the hell did you get a mobile processor with no intention of overclocking?? also. I have a strong feeling the chip is dead.

You may want to see if your BOIS will support the mobile processor, I would believe it should but it may have to be updated before it will.

If you have the option, you might try the chip on another motherboard. That might help determine if the cpu is dead or not.

yeah best bet at this point would be to check each component indivdually, starting with the processor.

From what I've heard, some motherboards don't support the Mobile XP cpus. You may have one that just isn't gonna work. If you have access to another mobo, try it there and see what happens.
