Barton 2500 vs Barton 2800

I am planning on building new pc I am short on money, which should I get(taking in consideration long run) Barton 2500 or Barton 2800, is it really worth it $90 more for 2800. Hows 2800 with overclocking can I reach that 3000

Also I am thinking of A7N8x Deluxe for motherboard with PC3200 Corsair XMS CL2 DDR, is there better motherboard for this money.

I can only say I would personally buy the 2500+ and an 8rda+(under$90) to go with it. You could probably get more ram, or a nicer video card or something with the money you save. You can probably get the 2500+ up to at least 2.2ghz range, and I doubt the 2800+ would overclock that much better.

no need to pay a premium for a higher rating

the 2500+ should overclock well too if you decide to do that later

about the same as you can overclock the 2500+

depends on yur cooling and what voltages yur willing to give the chip
2.2ghz shouldn't be inconceivable tho

The whole point is that you can buy the 2500+ now and save a siginificant amount of money. Then you can pick up a 2800+ (or better) in 6 months for peanuts to increase your performance if you need.

Or you can buy the XP2500 now and overclock it to the speed of an XP3200 =)

Or both, overclocked 2500+ now, overclocked 2800+ or 3000+ or 3200+ or whatever in the future.

I got a 2500+ and overclocked it to 2800+. I could easily go higher, but I don't *need* to push it any further right now.

I didn't change the FSB at all, so I'm still at 166. I just upped the multiplier to 12.5 (rather than 11). The bartons should be unlocked up to 13x multipliers (at least on the MSI motherboard).

Yea, even my old KT400 chipset m/b runs my 2500+ at 12x166 easy.

2.2 - 2.3 Ghz is about the limit for Barton cores, no matter what model CPU you buy... so go with the cheapest model you can get... an XP2800 isn't going to overclock any better than an XP2500.

Good i found this thread. I just posted on the exact same topic. i was leaning towards the 2800+ but everyone seems to say 2500+

w/ corsair twin mx 3200 (on 2-2-2-6) could i take the 2500 to a 400 mhz bus w/out detriment (even if this means bringing down the multiplier)

sometimes running a 333mhz chip @ 400mhz is actually detrimental. what are ppl's take on this. Does the barton 2500+ play nice @ 200 and beyond?

Cool, did you try raising the fsb and leaving the mult at 11 or lowering that? I was wondering if you did better raising the mult or if you just didn't bother.

I've had mine running at 221 before for a couple months with PC2700 RAM... had the RAM speed set at 75% so I could reach those speeds... had the multiplier at 10... so I was running 2210 Mhz on a 221 Mhz FSB... but the RAM was slow so I wasn't get the BEST performance. And now the RAM I have doesn't like to be run above 200... so I'm just running 200x11. Too bad they don't have 90% RAM dividers... that would allow me to run a much high FSB than I am now, and keep the RAM at it's 200 mhz rated speed. I've actually even been able to boot and run benchmarks at 230 Mhz FSB, but the RAM wasn't stable at 83% (191 Mhz) ... I have no idea why.

I only have PC2700, rather than PC3200, so I haven't tried upping the FSB yet. I probably will when I'm done working in a week or two. I'd like to know how high others have got their PC2700, crucial or otherwise.
