Barton 2500+ running @ 49C idle (system temp 36) - too high?

That seems a bit high to me but I just wanted to run it by you guys

This is what I'm running:
AS5 thermal compound w/ SilentBoostK8
3 80mm case fans 1 120mm in the front

Air flow could definitely be better but I still think that's too high. Could it possibly be a bad mounting? I've always just followed AS5 instructions, any suggestions/tricks to get better temps?

If you are confident the heatsink is seated properly on the pocessor, it might be the nature of a "silent" cooler.

With a layer of thermal grease, the heatsink should "float" on the processor. It should be able to slip around just a little bit like an air hockey puck. If the heatsink is flush mounted on the processor, increase the fan speed.

Someone with that specific heatsinik may see this and weigh in.

If you have another heatsink, like the AMD retail HSF, put on and get a reading for comparison.

Yeah, that seems a bit high. Things to check:

(1) HS fan is turning at proper rpm (BIOS or MBM5 can show the rpm's)

(2) Look for dust clogging the HS fins

(3) Too much AS5 applied will hinder cooling.

That's 3 deg warmer than mine with stock cooling. However, mine is OC'ed to 3200 speed.

yeah, definitely too high. Oddly enough the load temps are fine, hovering right around 53C. Any guess as to why the idle temp is so high?

Too high for what? Are you having problems, lockups? If not, then forget about it and don't loose sleep over it. Maybe it's a few degrees higher than the norm, i'm sure there are plenty of users who have higher idle temps with the same CPU and their systems run 100% stable. I'm guessing that according the official AMD specs, your not even close the the maximum operating temp of that Barton.

Sounds to me your mobo temp sensors are out of whack - it's not likely to be 36 degrees in your case with 3 fans blowing. Mobo thermal diodes are known to be pretty unreliable - I've had 5 mobos in my current case over the years, and some recorded system temps almost twice as high as others. I wouldn't worry about it as long as the system is stable (i.e. check with Prime95 for extended periods of time).

Those idle temps seem a little high, but you're still way below the maximum operating temperature of the Barton chips. Per the AMD specs, the Bartons have a max temperature of 80-90C, so you shouldn't damage the chip or cause instability.
