Personally, I am waiting till socket 939 Athlon 64 chips sell at a reasonable price (unless I can find a 754 Athlon 64 3200+ setup at low enough pice).
they are too expensive now

For someone who already hase a regular baron ocing to 2.3-2.4g, I'd say: wait. If he has a slower setup, then it may make sense to find a mobile barton that can oc to 2.4-2.5g, which, to me, can stay work pretty decently for at least 6-12months.

Yea, for me I just recently upgraded to a 2500 xp barton. Of course it is overclocked to 3200xp speeds. I think I'll upgrade my motherboard and CPU in a year or so. By then hopefully PCI express motherboards and video cards will be abundant. Right now the 2500xp is plenty fast for surfing the internet and playing games.

I'm waiting to see which 754 mb shows itself to be the best overclocking board. And to keep myself busy in the mean time I just ordered a mobile 2600 to play with. I'm shooting for 2800 MHz with chilled water.

Heh, I want some new RAM before I think of replacing my Barton - then I can finally get the performance it is capable of. I tested it with some friends BH-5 and got the FSB up to 210 on stock volts (1.65v) so with some decent RAM this CPU should really fly.

I probebly won't replace it until I have a fat wodge of cash and the price of 939 A64s and PEG GeForce 6s has come down. Then I can go for a full blown Doom3/HL2/UE3 munching system :D

I will be upgrading in mid June. I am having trouble deciding between a P4 Northwood 3.2 with HT or an AMD64 on 939... I play games and some media encoding (MP3's). I might get into encoding DVDs soon as well. Both are so good that I am torn between the two.

I'll most likely buy another stick of 512mb Kingston HyperX DDR333 RAM first before buying an A64+ CPU and mobo. Might even stick a 3200+ in my AT7-MAX2 before upgrading.

I guess I'm moving backwards. I built a system with a Duron 1.4GHz and a Biostar micro-atx Nforce2 board. Multiplier locked at 10.5 x 200 with some crappy ram at 11-3-3-2.5. I went with a silent set-up in a micro-tower, custom fans in the case and power supply. Topped it off with a Radeon 8500 128MB @300/300.
Put a custom handle on it and carry it back and forth to work everyday. It is quiet, small and honestly I can't tell much of a difference from my 2500+@3200+ rig which sits at home collecting dust.

I finally updated my 9 year old son's rig to a 2500+@3200+ with a Radeon 9700Pro. Unless I am trying to play Halo or Unreal 2004 at 1280 x 1024, I don't notice much of a difference except for the awful noise.

So I am in no hurry to update for awhile, unless I get hooked on a game my current rigs can't play. Heck, alot of the time I just use my old PII 400MHz server with Win98, Firefox and all Microshaft crap pulled out to post in here. Runs great!

I just build a rig based on the 2800+ Barton. I'll overclock it when it starts to show its' age. I made this rig for the sole purpose of holding out until new technologies come out and mature. I'm waiting for BTX, DDRII, PCI-E 16x, PCI-E, and a SATA standard for all devices. Hey, it only cost me $370 to build it all too so i'm not complaining :)

I just upgraded to a barton a couple of months ago from a 850mHz T-Bird. I think I will be keeping it for a couple years anyways.. I'm going to get the last AGP video card released too I think to get the most use out of my motherboard... By the way I have a Barton 2500+ Mobile at 2.5 gHz

I don't see myself upgrading until ~2 years . I'll probably end up running a 2.5-2.6Ghz AthlonXP barton on 216Mhz FSB. It should be fine. What do you all think of that setup? It should last me fine for the next 2 years right?

Should be more than enough. Maybe wait until the 9700/9800Pro drops below $100 and update the video card if you run out of gaming power.

My desktop 2500+ system will not be ugraded until I can afford to get a Socket 939 A64 system based on the NF3-250Gb Ultra. At 2.3GHz my system is fast enough for everything I do. I'm not hurting for more performance yet.

Yep, I hear that mega...Just upgraded to this mobile 2600 to play with until the a64's drop somewhat..also jumped my 9700 pro to a 9800 pro AIW to tide me over for a while.

But I really try to get all my buds that need a cheap upgrade to go 2500 barton, for the price and performance, well it can't be beat.

I'm thinking I'll upgrade at the end of the summer before I go to college.

Hopefully I'll be able to get a S939 A64 and PCI Express by then.

As soon as I can get this temperature fiasco i'm having under control i'm gonna OC my 2800+ to 3400+ and hopefully that'll last me another year or 2, at least until longhorn comes out :) I think my answer lies in AS5
