Barton 2500 cpu

I have a dead biostar motherboard I purchased from newegg. I tried my CPU from an older system and no go after taking out everything else from the MB. My question is can I try to put the barton in my old MB that is only a 266Mhz bus. The barton is a 333Mhz. I would like to check it before I RMA so I know whether to send them both back or not.
