And companies wonder why they end up hiring incompetents half the time despite all this nonsense.

Simply shocking that deciding which candidates deserve to have their resumes reviewed by a live human who is familiar which the jobs actual requirements based on use of trendy "buzz-words" results in hiring complete idiots a lot of the time.

Thing is actually interviewing and determining if a person can actually DO a job effectively (or even show up for it on time/regularly) requires EFFORT and is as much an art as a science.

I agree. I also think the last interview should be with the team you would be joining. Thats what we do. If we're hiring a network engineer, its all network questions. If its a cloud engineer, its all cloud stuff. We also ask alot of what if questions.

Come to think of it I don't think I even have any of my school transcripts, is that something you were actually suppose to keep? I'd hate to be screwed out of being able to get a job because of that. My current job was fairly easy to get into but that was a bit over 10 years ago. Now days it's much harder to get a job and the requirements tend to be much higher.

Actually I kind of regret not doing all the comptia certs before they were set to expire. They used to be life time. Some companies still ask for that stuff lol. I can't justify doing certs now knowing they're only good for like 3-5 years. All that studying and work, only to have to do it over again. If I was in a position where I knew for sure I had to be looking for a new job soon then I'd start trying to get some done though.

I mean, I probably should anyway, because my company is a ticking time bomb, they often do mass layoffs at random with zero notice. They just laid off 17 people recently from what I heard. I've been on vacation and start tonight, hope my access fob will still work lol.

Lot of good stuff in here (going through the motions to out source, etc) but common wisdom with such a large portion of the labor force out of work is that it's theoretically an employer's market right now.

Business that stayed open through the pandemic likely think they can be more stringent/choosy with their applicants and rework the job postings and requirements to boot.

My wife has it worse than that. She's a self employed translator. Shes worked for some pretty big clients (corporate and government) and has a ton of experience. She's registered with various professional organisations and has a string of relevant qualifications as long as your arm.
A few times a year she reaches out to new clients just to keep her lists fresh and invariably there'll be a fair few clients that want >thousand word translations as "tests" of her language skills.
Like she says how often do you get your car mechanic to do a few jobs on your car for free before starting to pay him?

I remember back in the 70's when I was applying at the phone company for a rep job. The things she asked (the interviewer).

Q. Where do you work now?
A. At a bank.
Q. Are the surroundings nice i.e. nice carpet, nice desks and chairs?
A. Yes, very nice.
Q. How do you feel about that?

At this point I knew either she was nuts or I was in the Twilight Zone.
I stuck with the bank job.

Saw a job opening for an infantry soldier in my area the other day for the CAF with a list of required duties like fight anywhere in the world from very cold climates to very hot climates, and know how to operate everything from a hand gun to an anti aircraft gun. It was the oddest thing to see but what made it even funnier is that it was a part time position, and no salary disclosure. Normally when they don't disclose the salary it means it's minimum wage or close to it. So you're expected to do all that , but it's only part time and probably minimum wage so it won't even pay the bills. And we all know how well our government treats veterans so it's not like there's any extra compensation when you return, injured or not.

This is how bad the job market is right now.
