Barkley accuses Augusta of racism for changing golf course

Charles Barkley has decided that the whole reason Augusta National implemented such major changes recently is to keep Tiger from winning. Because Tiger is black (yes, I know he's actually more asian than black, but this is what Sir C had to say). So Augusta National GC are a bunch of racists.

Full text of story here.

I have to say that this is possibly the dumbest thing Barkley has had to say since the whole "I'm not a role model" debacle. The main thing they did to the course was to make it longer (300-odd yards longer). This will of course punish the shorter hitters on tour as they will have to hit longer irons into Augusta's ultra-fast greens, and longer irons don't make the ball check like shorter irons do....meaning a lot of missed GIR and a lot of chipping (and potentially lost strokes). Let's look at the tour driving distance stats to see who the longer hitters are that might benefit from this...

DRIVING DISTANCE
Rank Name Rounds Stat
1 John Daly 17 316.7
2 Tiger Woods 16 299.3
3 Tim Herron 22 297.5
4 Harrison Frazar 16 295.6
T5 Davis Love III 15 295.4

Oh look. Tiger hits the ball a long damn way. I guess the longer course will actually benefit him. How interesting.

The sad thing (and the point that Sir Stupid completely missed) is that what these changes will really do is prevent past champions from coming back to play every year because they don't want to be embarassed by the scores they'll shoot on the new course(it's Master's policy that past champions may play every year for as long as they wish). So the crowd will likely not get to see Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, etc from now on.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.:|

<< ``We need black athletes to speak out,'' said Barkley, who poses bare-chested on the cover of Sports Illustrated appearing to break chains and shackles. ``Michael (Jordan) could do it and Tiger could do it, but you have to be willing to be ridiculed. I'm willing to be ridiculed.'' >>

I agree, but they need INTELLIGENT African-American athletes to speak out, not people who don't know what they're talking about. Ignorant people base stereotypes on what they perceive to be dumb statements. This can easily be perceived as a dumb statement.

Most athletes say dumb things. Unfortunately, the fact that the press and the public put much credance to their opinions is even dumber.

PGA is also expanding the courses to compensate for technology that is increasing the shot distance/power.

They have already regulated the balls, but the new clubs/irons/drivers are allowing longer shots thereby reducing the stroke count and/or difficulty.

I've watched Tiger play that course many times.
Folks LOVE Tiger.

I know a few AN members; they are not racist.
50 years ago they had some racists, but not now.
I know some of these guys well enough that if they were racists, I would know.

ya but you gotta love sir charles. at least he's not afraid to speak out. Poor MJ over there is gonna die early of a stroke or heart attack because of all the times he bit his tongue so that his marketing value will be strong.

btw. i don't agree w/ what charles said about augusta. i just always found him amusing.

<< i just always found him amusing. >>

I agree... it was an NBA analyst who said it and I forget the exact quote, but it went something like:

"Charles Barkley is an interesting person to watch. He's the only human being I've ever met that you can actually see a thought forming in his head and two seconds later he will speak exactly what you thought he was going to say."

I'm sure I butchered that, but hopefully it got the point across 😛

Why is everything race issue? I dont get it, how retarded can some people be!

Yeah I don't agree with what Barkley has said about Augusta and the changes, but I am a huge fan of him as an NBA announcer. Sometimes I end up watching games on TNT or TBS just for the halftime show where Barkely, Ernie Johnson, and Kenny Smith talk it up. Most of the time even the stupid things he says are good for a laugh...

<< aphex

it woud seem that if you want to accuse someone of being retarded you would at least spell the word correctly.
>>

Platinum: Next time you try to correct me on my spelling, why dont you try spelling things correctly yourself. Its would not woud 🙂

LOL, you guys are funny, corrected each other spelling. BTW, I know my spelling & grammar suck, so don't even try. 🙂

Barkley is a moron. he is good for a laugh though...kind of like that "omg i can't believe how dumb this guy is" way.

Aphex - If you're going to correct someone's spelling because they corrected you, you could at least have the basic decency to spell your words correctly that time. I.e., "don't" instead of "dont" and "it's" (for it is) instead of "its." 😉

Definitely his most moronic comment ever. I'm a big fan of Charles, ever since he played at Auburn. I bet he would feel real stupid if someone were to explain to him how the new length of Augusta benefits Tiger.

As for the "I'm not a role model" statement. I couldn't agree more with him when he said it. His stance was that parents should be role models, not him. I think it is sad that many kids grow up thinking that they will be the next big star athlete when they have a better percentage chance of getting into Harvard than the NBA. Athletes should not be role models because most of them can't even manage themselves, much less the expectations of kids.

what if the kids parents were both drug addicts or alcoholics or abusive? should the parents still be role models? or should the kid look for a role model in the public eye?

and essentially excludes the "old white guys" in the process (and Nicklaus even happens to be a member of AN....sheesh).....double-whammy of stupidity,

Tiger is flat-out such an amazingly good golfer that there's really no change they could make to the course that would hinder him. Anything they do will punish all the other players as well, so he's still going to have a good chance to win.

Hey now! We're not talking about correct grammar here, just correct spelling 🙂

Now wait a minute...Is Barkley saying that white golf courses are harder than black golf courses? I mean, Augusta is changing it so whites will win (ie. not tiger), which means white people courses must be harder.

Next time I tee it up, I'm going to see if we have any black courses around here. I'll probably lower my score a couple shots.

yeah i think that I need to work on my handicap too 😉

<< I'm willing to be ridiculed. >>

Bah, he WANTS to be ridiculed. It keeps him the spotlight where guys like Tiger and Jordan can rely on their talent to do that.

<<Oh look. Tiger hits the ball a long damn way. I guess the longer course will actually benefit him. How interesting.>>

No it won't. It will cause Tiger, like everyone else, to have to hit longer, therefore less accurate, 2nd and 3rd shots. So will Tiger, because some of the changes will likely make certain holes where he may have been able to realistically go for the green in 2 shots into definite 3 shot holes.
Yes, Augusta is most certainly Tiger-proofing the course, to a point. He hits the ball so far and so accurately, that he has chip shots where others have mid-iron shots. But can you blame them? Do we WANT to see ANYONE win the Masters by as many strokes as Tiger did a few years ago?

Also, they aren't just looking at Tiger....as Tiger himself said, there are amateurs in college right now that hit the ball farther than he does...Augusta is looking ahead to these players turning pro, also.

Finally, to the guy who said that no members of Augusta are racist.....B. freaking S. No racists in a nearly all-white golf club in GEORGIA? I suppose there's no Eskimos in Alaska, either.
Not saying the whole club is, but there damn sure are some older members who no doubt are.

Edit:
<<Bah, he WANTS to be ridiculed. It keeps him the spotlight where guys like Tiger and Jordan can rely on their talent to do that. >>

Exactly. He wouldn't get off his fat ass and get in good enough shape this summer to cause MJ to sign him, so this is the only way he can keep getting headlines.

Making the course longer punishes everyone, it just punishes the longer hitters less, and therefore benefits them. Besides, he's an excellent short-game player and putter so having to go in three on par fives still won't hurt him as much as everyone else. If they really wanted to "tiger-proof" the course, they would make the fairways narrower and the rough higher as he does tend to be erratic off the tee when not having a great day. But yeah, it's basically "all-the-new-guys-that-hit-it-long-all-the-damn-time" proofing. Augusta does have it's pride.🙂

Of course there are members who are utter racists....this is the south and they are old white men. The point is that Tiger is one of the best things that ever happened to them publicity-wise and they would never in a million years do anything to jeopardize that despite the personal feelings of individual members. Again, it's not about keeping Tiger from winning, it's about adjusting the course to not be embarassed by some of the up and coming players.
