[bare]Min hardware specs for WinXP box

(I was hoping to hear from somebody that has ACTUALLY TRIED to run XP on a old PC)

I have a Celeron 866 box that I drug out it has plenty of RAM what problems can I expect if I install XP on it. (I can't find 98 anywhere)

The only thing I need to do on it is have limited acess to the web and run a small database. I'll probably just use Firefox.

I'm thinking I can get away with it any thoughts?

866 is not too bad, just bump up the memory. At work they have xp running on p2 350's with 192mb of ram....slow as a slug

XP needs very little CPU power to run. Turn off all the useless eye candy and use the Windows Classic UI and an 866 Celeron will be plenty. Having at least 256MB of RAM or more is what will have a greater impact on XP's performance.

wonderful. I have 512mb (2x256) in there now. I can probably aquire another 256 for the 3rd slot if I end up needing it.

thanks for the helpfull/quick replies.

Dotn go by raw specs. I ran an old Gateway P2 350 with 192MB of PC-133 memory. XP worked with all the bells and whistles. Slow, but it worked absolutely without a hitch.

I question your usage of the word "run" to describe Windows XP's performance in that situation. "Crawl" would be more like it. 😉

256MB is fine for very basic use; 512MB is where things start to fly (unless you're doing Photoshop or something similar that needs 1GB+). Your CPU is perfectly fine.
