I'm far too lazy before I hit the weights. Anyone have a spreadsheet version where I can toss in the total weight and it'll tell me which weights and quantity i need?

I see various iOS apps and it's only 99c but i'd rather have a spreadsheet to work from. If no one has one, i'll break out the benjamins for an app.

Am I reading this right? You want a spreadsheet, or a paid app, to tell you the plate combinations needed for certain weights?

Work backwards when putting weight on...once you do it the first few times at the gym, it becomes second nature.

Say you want to bench 185 pounds.

The bar is 45, so now you're at 140. Put on two 45s.
140 - 90 = 50
Now put on two 25s.

Ad nauseum. It's real easy...

yes you read correctly! in my defense, it's easier to ask on my behalf than to post "how do i get my math deficient friends to stop asking me how to get to xxx weight on the barbell"

Short of explaining basic math, they can't grab the concept. I'll gift them 99 cents for an app, it's cheaper than buying me beers when we go out.

I was like in 8th grade I did this.

Just do it in excel. Make a column for each weight you own. Figure out every combination. Make a column that calculates the total weight. Sort by that last column. Print it out.

Having said that, you shoudl be able to do this in your head.

Memorize the big landmarks and go from there. Bar + a pair of 45s = 135. Bar + 2 pair = 225. Bar + 1 pair 45s + 1 pair 25s = 185. It's honestly pretty simple. If gym rats can figure it out, I'm sure someone registered to a tech forum can do it :p

Your math deficient friends should start with 5s and 10s and should be able to figure it out from there. I'd say they should also start with 2.5s, but that might be a little too complicated.

That's how i explained it to him! +2.5 = 50 and add what you need and work with factors of 5.

Lost cause, sometimes i feel the whole musclehead is true.

if they can text you, they can use the calculator that's built into their damned cell phone.

Sorry, I'm cranky tonight.

The app is free and you already have it. It's called Notes.

Chart it out for them.

95 = 25
115 = 35
135 = 45
185 = 45 + 25
225 = 45 + 45
275 = 45 + 45 + 25
315 = 45 + 45 + 45
