That's too bad. It's been a roller coaster since last spring.

That doctor wasn't kidding when he said "It's a long road ahead". I had no idea it would go on for this long. He's too good of a horce to let go. I wanna see him sire 10 derby winners.

can horses not be artificially inseminated?

from wiki

A stallion is usually trained to mount a phantom mare, although a live mare may be used, and he is collected using an artificial vagina (AV), which is often heated to simulate the vagina of the mare. The AV has a filter and collection area at one end to collect the semen, which is then processed in a lab. The semen is then chilled or frozen and shipped to the mare owner. When the mare is in heat, a veterinarian introduces the semen directly into her via a syringe and pipette.

he must be able to mount, and after (if) he is recovered there are doubts to if his repaired hoof can handle that stress.

what about methods other than the usual? i can't believe that the owners are spending hundreds of thousands on a horse with such an uncertain chance of recouping.

I've heard enough about the horse too .... there are tons of people suffering in the world, and so many care about a future McDonald's 'hamburger'?

edit: shot at McD's, not that I think horses should be food for the PETA-enabled folk :p

they are very rich..although they seem really attached to him.

if he can end up breeding, they will recoup all their money plus..

its a shame for the horse but it happens every day with race horses.

The stud fees alone on him will pay for his price, his medical bills and everything else 100s of times over.

Actually, I don't believe horses conceived through anything but natural means are allowed to race.

which is why the question is whether they're getting the stud fees now or if they can't start recouping until he can mount a dummy mare

Again, he's not going to have to mount a dummy, but a real mare.

When this happened the owners said they didn't care about getting the money back, they just like the horse. Besides, I'm sure they had a huge insurance policy on him in case of an injury that prevented him from mating.

Just imagine if you could get a race horse with Barbaro as the father and maggie slew (seatle slews last offspring) as the mother.

That would be freakin' sweet.
