Barbaro hurt in Preakness horse race

One of the best horses we've seen in a long time is career ending injured. I hope he isn't put down. 🙁

What a weird race. He was so powerful he BROKE through the starting gate when they were loading. They had to reload him.

There will be plenty of this in the sporting news.

Final
8 - Bernardini wins.
7 - sweetnorthernsaint
3 - Hemmingway's key.

Trifecta paid close to 4,000 dollars.

He was one of the best horses since secretariat. Really sad.
-edit-
Fracture above and below the ankle. 🙁
He's done.

Let's hope he can still be bred. He was unbeaten until this race. absolutely dominating horse.

"KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- Barbaro's condition turned "potentially serious" again Wednesday, a day after the Kentucky Derby winner's veterinarian gave a more upbeat report, saying the colt was stable and resting comfortably.

WTH? I've never seen anything like that. Was that poor stewardship on the part of the race start gatekeepers?

If they can fix him. I really hope they don't have to put him down. 🙁

But man, what a horse. He was being compared to Tiger Woods in terms of dominance. I followed him through the Kentucky Derby prep races and other trainers didn't want to run against him.

I think he just broke through the gate. He heard something and just broke through. He's that strong.

It's actualy fairly common for a horse to break the gates. But it usualy happens with lower grade horses not Triple Crown material.

after being invovled with horse racing since a kid, helping train a race horse with dad now, ive seen this happen NUMEROUS times....too many than i'd like to admit.
It really looks like he borke his rear ankle. From the way it was flopping it looked a lot worse than a sprain. a LOT worse.
The good thing is with the vets they have around those horses at the big races like that the horse can and most likely will be saved. I've seen horses come back from rear ankle breaks, as they can split it. Now if it was a front ankle his life would be over, they would put him down, but as you could probobly see from how he was standing the horse can still pick up a back leg and stand just fine without putting too much pressure on it. If they can keep him off it for a good 3-4 months, keep him eating, keep him calm, he will make it back to being a horse that can live out the rest of his life. His racing career is over, and its likely his breeding career as well (a horse stands on back legs while breeding, this horse probobly wont be able to do that).
That all being said i hate the way the NBC brodcast team covered this, costas and his crew made a spectacle out the injury instead of the race. Anyone that knows in horse racing this is common, not so common it happens ever race, but common enough that the jockey was prepped for it, the trainer knows how to care for the hrose, and the vets can do things. Like Zito said before the race ANYTHING can happen. A horse pulling up like that isn't that rare, and thats why the race continued. I hate seeing things like this happen but to drown out Bernardini and the amazing 2nd place finish of sweetnorthernmorning was dispicable of the NBC crew. I know the world was watching and many many people wanted to see it, but thats the way the sport is.

If a horse can't stand you have to put him down.
just wanted to mention, thats not exactly true. Advancements in horse medicine and vetrinary techniques have made broken legs on horses not necessarily meaning you have to put them down. I've seen splints and casting techniques especially for back leg injuries that help horses recover and although not race again, they get to live out their life. If it was a front leg I'd be more concerned but a back leg isnt as complicated as a front leg and thus can be tended to and not cause a horse to give up like they would a front leg.

Drakkon,

Thanks a bunch for the inside info. I agree with everything you said - especially the coverage. This stuff happens and they needed to focus on the race.

SO and I kept saying - "don't bring out the tent"

What makes it so sad is he was such a promising/dominant horse.

I had Bernardini in most of my tris/exactas. Good horse, and sweetnorthernsaint was the talk of the trainers here in lou, KY.

Local news just showed the horse on its way up I-83 to University of Pennsylvania (where they have a great vet program). Apparently, it will take 2 weeks before it will be known whether the injury will cost the horse his life.

The report indicated that the breaking through the gate prematurely was NOT what caused the injury. (2 breaks in the right rear).

I live down the street from the New Bolton center, where the horse is - the good thing is that it's really an amazing facility, i took field trips there when I was a kid. If there is any place that can fix things up, it's there.

Oh well, looks he gets to live the rest of his life fu*#ing.
Even if there is no vessel damage (i.e. not life threatening) he might not ever get to stud. If its a rear leg injury, Barbaro might be unable to mount a mare. 🙁

Here's hoping at least he gets to live out his days on a nice farm with good stablemates and all the TLC he deserves.

So this guy came into where I work, ordered a beer and was all nervous and sh!t. He told me that I should watch the races because a big-time horse was going to get hurt. I was like, "Yeah, I bet." Now that I read this, it's almost weird.
