Watching CNN and Fox now, reporting she has died. There was a fake news story yesterday from a fake CNN website, but being reported as dead. Not seeing anything on news sites yet...

This is a formal condolence thread. Please stay classy and respectful. No arguments, no crosstalk. All such has been removed. If you have only criticism to offer, don't post or you will be sanctioned.

That's sad, rest in peace Barbara. Always liked her, one of my exs knew her well.

I expect 41 will be following her soon now, which is also sad. :(

My sympathies to the family, particularly GHWB. Men usually are poorly prepared for our wives to pass on before us. We don't think in those terms.

RIP. One of my favorite first ladies and her husband was a wildly underrated president.

Ditto. What I liked about her was she acted like a real person and was unafraid to speak her own mind (which backfired after Catrina).

Her husband could have been a great President if he hadn't fallen under the St. Ronald hypnotism. He initially called it what it was-voodoo economics-but got sucked in anyway.

I met them both briefly about 8-9 years ago. She was very friendly. Both of them were.

I’m afraid with her passing we’ll be having a Federal holiday soon as husbands tend to pass soon after their wives. :(

RIP

I have a hard time faulting Melania for anything. She hasn’t really done anything that I’d view as negative. I’d cut her some slack given the situation she’s in.

The position of using her natural beauty to marry a man for his money and power? Being a trophy wife is hard duty I guess....

Now I do remember when Mrs. Bush stood up against the stigma impacting people with AIDS by visiting with AIDS infected children, openly embracing them for all to see. That's the woman I remember.

She supported gay rights as well...including marriage.

Shook her hand when I was in grammar school. Don't remember what she was in New Orleans for, but the whole class met her.

RIP, Barbara. Her 1990 Commencement speech at Wellesley College was heartfelt and wonderful.

Raisa Gorbachev, right, wife of Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, raises the hands of Barbara Bush at Wellesley’s graduation ceremony on June 1, 1990. (Don Emmert/AFP/Getty Images)

The crowd of 5,000 was with her from the beginning. She exhorted them to chase their careers but to never forget that “you are a human being first and those human connections — with spouses, with children, with friends — are the most important investments you will ever make.”

At the end, she tiptoed up to controversy: “And who knows? Somewhere out in this audience may even be someone who will one day follow in my footsteps, and preside over the White House as the president’s spouse …”

But when she ended with this: “ … and I wish him well,” they gave her a prolonged standing ovation as she and [Raisa] Gorbachev beamed.

When she returned to the White House, staffers had strung a banner for her. It said, “A job Wellesley done.”
