Barack Obama adviser says Sharia Law is misunderstood

The vast majority of Sharia law is misunderstood. A lot of it gets mixed up with culture as well. The Qu'ran does not forbid many of the things forbidden to women in the Arab countries.
It'd be like taking a look at the Spanish Inquisition and upholding that as God's Soldiers enforcing the Law of God.

The Holy Bible is littered with highly misogynistic ideas, such as women shouldn't be allowed to speak in church, should obey her husband, etc. That doesn't mean that it's right, either. Our own culture was very oppressive towards women not too long ago, and there are always attempts to go back to it - we're just more enlightened now.

Foolish laws based on a foolish religion. There is nothing to misunderstand about Sharia law. It has no place in the modern world. Everyone knows this.
Only a bunch of uneducated morons would follow Sharia Law...too bad there are over a billion of them.

Sharia law is not misunderstood...its a disgusting system of law that openly instructs woman to be treated like garbage, and for anyone who is not a Muslim to be treated like trash aswell. If this is the type of attitude we can expect from Obamas 'religion' Czar then its pretty clear that shes a 'Islam is greater than thou' loon who is unfit for her job of representing all religions fairly and has furthering her own religion as priority over others [going by her last name she appears to be Muslim].

To be fair, just because something is misunderstood does not mean that greater understanding of it would lead to acceptance. For example, I'm ignorant of many of the finer points of Sharia law. I accept my ignorance. However, I don't think that a greater understanding of Sharia law is going to change my opinion that it is something that has no place in a civilized society.

The opening post stated that Sharia law need not have the harsh interpretations regarding woman's rights the Taliban have added, and Sharia law, like our legal system, can grow and evolve over time. And because its based on the Koran, its therefore borrows heavily from the old and new Testaments of the "JudoChristian" bible.
And when an Obama advisers notes that Sharia law is not as bad as our propaganda made it out to be, that popping sound is all the propaganda full heads heads imploding, leaving the total vacuum of ignorance behind.

The other thing to note, and why this thread is relevant, is that Nato acceptance of Sharia law may be one of the costs to be paid in Winning the Afghan peace. And if Nato can have some hand in writing the final codes, woman's rights and a host of other rights can be protected. Keeping everyone rational happy.
So, Women in Afghanistan will only have to wear burkhas. They're lucky. They won't have their clits sliced off at puberty with shards of broken beer bottles like they do in Egypt. An "allied" country.

Genital mutiliation isn't even Muslim, it's an African practice. It's practiced by African Christians, Muslims and Animists.
I think Sharia 'law' is like any other 'law' --- subject to interpretation and in a constant struggle for 'modernization'.
There are Islamic countries that promote Sharia law constitutionally along with secularism and women's rights. I think it is a false choice to only hold up the ugly 'traditionalist' Sharia for comparison. I think it is also a fallacy to hold up America as a shinning example of 'law' and righteousness. Our history (some current) is rife with ugly examples that because of our own bias we tend to overlook.

That, and it has been misrepresented, much the same as was done with Halachic law to condemn Jews not so long ago. Muslims have been made the new focus of hate since then, but the tactics used to do that are much the the same, and you of the masses eat them up much the same.
If you bother to check Qur'an, the actual standards of dress it proposes are far less stringent than burqas.
