Banning Dodgeball in School?

I was watching the show RealSports on HBO tonight, and one of their features was about a professor named Neil Williams that believes the game of dodgeball should be banned from schools. One reason Williams gives to support his stance is that dodgeball "encourages the strong to pick on the weak". He has even gone so far as to make a list called the Physical Education Hall of Shame of games that should be banned in PE classes. IMO, this is unbelievable.....it's a complete waste of time, energy, and any money that has been/is put into it already. I didn't know how big of an issue this actually was until I found that Rick Reilly of SI wrote an article about it. I can't believe this is even an issue when there are more important things to address than whether or not the game of dodgeball should be banned. I can see it now....kids that aren't allowed to play games from the "Hall of Shame" in school start begging their parents to host underground dodgeball or musical chairs or duck, duck, goose games. I think this guy was one of the bad dodgeball players as a kid and needs to focus his work on something more important. My $.02

I dunno, I think without dodgeball I wouldn't have developed most of the hand eye coordination, catching skills, and agility that i have now (well, used to have). plus, I learned how to stick up to the strong. and yes, the weak did hide in the back.

I loved dodgeball!

We also used to play this other game in middle school called battleball. Same basic idea, but instead of just one ball, there was about 20 small rubber balls. It was much more fast-paced, and sometimes 10 or so kids would beam one kid at the same time...wonder what Professor Williams would think about that game? 🙂

I think he is right on.
Dodgeball terrifies many kids unessecarily.
There are better ways to teach kids the skills involved.
Yeah, it was fun for me, and holds a nostalgic place in many of our minds, but it is time to put this game out to pasture,

we used to play with about 20 volleyballs in high school...it was called Animal Ball...u're team could run up to about the foul line on the other teams side of the basketball court....damn those hurt at times...of course there was no head-hunting or anything...

it got banned after my freshmen year in high school...someone got hurt and told his mother and she complained...

looking at that list...KICKBALL?!?!?!?!?!? wtf??????
kickball rocks and u dont have to be big or anything...

God I remember playing Dodgeball in Elementary school~.. Everyone use to run to the back .. when me and a group of my friends got the ball~

It was more fun.. when you peg em in the a$$ while they are trying to run away~>.

No sh!t, especially since it's essentially the same thing as baseball, and that's not banned! I think this guy has an unnerving fear of those yellow playground balls

Also on the list is TAG! Tag is like the most basic game on the planet! That's like banning tic tac toe! 😕

I LOVED kickball!! (cause' I played soccer and I could kick far) I used to kick that ball way over everyone's heads (you know, at the fat girl with no coordination in right field) and get a home-run every time.

Dodgeball!! Awesome too.. At first I really sucked.. but then one year I played sports a lot and got really good.. Some times, I remember catching two of the dodge balls at once. Ahh.. the glory years.

Capture the flag! Awesome game..

Freeze tag.. so cool

teacher spins the merry-go-round.. vomit

Well, to solve the hand eye coordination you could play the N64 8 hours a day......

dodgeball might be cruel to the totally uncoordinated, but then again all sports are cruel to the totally uncoordinated. screw them.😛

maybe they should ban cliques and stuff too since that creates a hostile enviroment too😛

Man, those hard volleyballs do sting when they are thrown by huge 200 pound 6th graders. I lost a few teeth and pairs of glasses because of that game.

yeah, i watched that too tonight, and banning dodgeball woudl be simply retarded, i wasn't really sure what the deal was with that guy having people jump rope without a rope either, and what's the deal with that guy being dq'd from the olympics because of supplement use? that's sketchy

I would hope any school would have the brains not to put smaller kids up against the biggest 6th graders.😱

I think that banning dodgeball would be terrible!!! My last two years of high school, I participated in a program where seniors and juniors would go over to the elementary, and teach PE, and we had a black list. We could never play dodgeball, kickball, or any fun game for that matter. Now in the elementary schools you have to do activities that involve all of the students, and gives them all a chance to play. There is no way for the athletes to show their true potential... Is this the dumbing down of athletes that is also going on with the academic dumbing down?

we always had freshmen vs. sophmores with volleyballs...it sucked

and i just noticed SIMON SAYS!??!?!

RELAY RACES??!?!?!?

this guy smokes way to much crack

what does he suggest they play??

what the hell is messy backyard?...that doesnt sound like a good game 🙂

They should just make all of the strong kids wear weights to impede their movement. And the smart kids should wear headphones that emit randomly spaced bursts of noise that hinder their concentration.

That's straight out of the book Harrison Bergeron! It may come to that soon. Or a society similar to Brave New World.

You caught me, I dare not come up with any original thoughts and express them, it might call too much attention to me.

lol.....I didn't get that either considering one can't "jump rope" without having a rope to jump over 😕

I still can't believe that this guy is serious about wanting to see these games banned from schools and the amount of support that he gets from both parents and schools is unreal. I mean, Simon Says.....duck-duck-goose.....musical chairs? I'm starting to think that Professor Williams is just bitter that he wasn't good at any of these games when he was in elementary school, so now he's striking back at all PE teachers across the nation 😛 I'm waiting for the day where sports like basketball, football, and soccer end up on the list of games that should be banned.....better yet, why don't we just save everyone some time and ban all games/sports in schools that are or can be competitive in some way

shoot I don't know why football isn't banned already. If there is any sport that encourages more mean-spiritedness I certainly can't think of it.

But yeah, I can't really think of anything different between most of those and other competitive sports. We always threw the ball at the strongest guys on the other team, wanted to get them out so they didn't get our guys out. I'll agree with his predation thing on tag, but the others? Duck duck goose? I always thought that it was the prescribed method of declaring who you had a crush on!

I recall getting hit in the head with a vollyball during a dodgeball game with about 80 people... The freshman football players on one side, the rest of the football players on the other side.
