Banking Problem

About two weeks ago I made an ATM deposit of $450.00 split between cash and checks. I promptly left town on business and when I came back there was a mailing from Citibank explaining that they debited my account for $50.00 because there apparently was no deposit that day. I have since lost the ATM printout and did not yet have any deposit slips to use as it was a brand new account.

What can I do to get my money back?

that's exactly why I will never use an ATM machine to make a deposit. You better find that atm receipt, or you're probably up the creek without a paddle.

usually the deposit envelope is somewhere (they dont throw them out for a period of time), when i was working for Bank One they had file boxes full of them. I would wrtie down the address of the ATM in question, as well as the time you deposited and then go to the bank and complain. There is a paper trial just need to complain.

Is it possible to look at the bank security tapes to verify?

I think Slappy00's suggestion is a good one. Give them all of the other information to research. ATM address, day, time when you deposited the money, etc. etc. Video tape would confirm when you made the deposit.

I'm a bit confused... did they debit your account $50 or $450? And... they would have had to credit your account the money first, so they know you at least tried to make a deposit at the ATM, so what exactly are they claiming is what happened? That there was nothing in the envelope?

How much of it was checks vs. cash, and where were the checks from? Unless they were rebate checks or something like that, you shouldn't have much trouble recovering the money from the checks. Good luck with the cash.

Yeah, I'm confused too. Please clarify. I work at a bank and can ask the ATM guru what to do.

This is what happened:

9/13: I deposit a mizture of checks and cash at the ATM totaling $450. Account balance now shows $500 total and all is well.

9/14: I leave for my business trip and think nothing of my bank balance.

9/16: Citibank debits my account $450 because, in their own words, "An ATM deposit credited to your account on 9/13/2004 for $450.00 is missing, therefore we are debiting your account to reverse this deposit."

9/25: I come back home to find this mailing along with my bank account $450 less than it should be.

Go to the actual bank where you used the ATM and talk with one of the supervisors. Give them the exact day/time/location that you did the transaction. I bet that they can check the logs of that days transactions to at least show that you did make a deposit. However, proving that there was $450 is the hard part...and I'm not calling you a liar at all. Sounds like the envelope was conveniently "lost" by some disgruntled worker hehe.

That is my plan for Monday. I have a pretty close relationship with one of their personal bankers and I am a Supervisor at the local Best Buy with which they are trying to have a very close relationship. I doubt they are willing to sacrifice the negative word of mouth over what amounts to a trivial amount of money for the bank. I can give them paperwork showing that I withdrew large cash amounts from my B of A account (which was to be deposited in my Citibank) and there cameras should show that I was in fact there and I believe I counted the money at the ATM. I'm not TOO worried.

They already know he made a deposit, it showed up in his account and he subsequently got a letter about it. The issue is, as you alluded to, they believe there was either nothing in the envelope, or they can't find the envelope. Looking at the security camera tapes could help, if they keep the tapes that long.

More than likely though, you're going to have to accept the cash as lost and a lesson learned. I'd start trying to get the checks reissued by whomever you got them from. You may have some luck if you go into the bank and raise holy hell, but I wouldn't count on it.

That's the truth. Since they were checks, why don't you just get in touch with either person who wrote you the checks, or the bank they were drawn off of and request copies. They'll be able to trace it back that way. As for the cash, you're SOL.
