I'm a bit confused... did they debit your account $50 or $450? And... they would have had to credit your account the money first, so they know you at least tried to make a deposit at the ATM, so what exactly are they claiming is what happened? That there was nothing in the envelope?
How much of it was checks vs. cash, and where were the checks from? Unless they were rebate checks or something like that, you shouldn't have much trouble recovering the money from the checks. Good luck with the cash.
This is what happened:
9/13: I deposit a mizture of checks and cash at the ATM totaling $450. Account balance now shows $500 total and all is well.
9/14: I leave for my business trip and think nothing of my bank balance.
9/16: Citibank debits my account $450 because, in their own words, "An ATM deposit credited to your account on 9/13/2004 for $450.00 is missing, therefore we are debiting your account to reverse this deposit."
9/25: I come back home to find this mailing along with my bank account $450 less than it should be.
