i've read in "The Week"'s business column (written by something from morningstar.com) that you should throw out your old bank statements. true? do i need to save them?

she also suggests saving credit card statements, but i enrolled in the paperless option  are they that important?

thanks

Online bank statement or confetti the paper statement after you're done w/ them. I have bofa, I prefer the online statement.

A good rule of thumb I've heard is to keep a 3 year backlog. Beyond that there's really no need, unless you need proof of purchase for a warranty or something similar.

I keep them for about 6 months, as that is usually plenty of time to work out any errors that may show up.

I only keep my bofa statement if I'm depositing money via the ATM, and then only until I'm sure the money is there.

CC statements.... wth would you want to keep them? As long as there aren't any wierd charges there isn't any real use of keeping them.

I keep 1 year and shred any older. You sometimes need up to 1 year bank statements.

I tear them up. mostly, I don't even open them... just rip them to shreads and toss them in the trash.

never seen a point to saving them.

I scanned all our paper statements, saved them to CD-RW and put into a safe deposit box.
