Bank playing games

My paycheck is set for direct deposit. It usually comes on Friday but sometimes comes early on Thursday.

On Thursday morning my account balance increased by an amount similar to what I was expecting from my paycheck. The account usage history of my bank is usually a day or more behind so I had no way to see exactly what it was from.

I believe this to be my paycheck because I had no reason what so ever to believe it wasn't and spend a portion of it. Twenty four hours later, the bank withdraws all of the money that was deposited into my account which puts me into the negative. They then charge me for an overdraft fee for being in the negative. I was(and still am) absolutely furious.

I called them up and asked them what was going on and they said it was normal for stuff like that to happen(I called BS but they wouldn't hear it, thinking back, I was much too nice on the phone). They wouldn't undo the overdraft charge either. They led me to believe I had money that I didn't have through a mistake they made and then charged me for it.

I'm going to talk to them in person on Monday. The bank is Wachovia. Thoughts? Anyone have anything like this happen to them before?

Wachovia sucks. Good luck. They are all about collecting the fees. Moreso than any other bank that I've dealt with. Going in person tends to help a lot, and speak to a banker, not just a teller.

I hope you can get the fees reversed. But, you should look up on banking laws. You really need to give the banks several days after a deposit (even a direct deposit) to be certain that the money is there. You can't just rely on a pending amount that you see somewhere and hope that you can use the money instantly.

Tell them if they won't eat the overdraft fee you will pull your money out of their bank and happily put it with a competitor's. I thought Wachovia became Wells Fargo?

If it's COD 4, I want to play.

If Friday was my payday, I wouldn't spend it on Thursday.

They did merge with Wells Fargo or were bought by them, something like that.

The charge was 45 bucks. It's not gonna kill me but I'm not rich either. It pisses me off more than any financial damage it causes. I am considering closing the account and getting another bank but I won't decide on that until after Monday.

I didn't wait a few days because I had no idea my account balance could go up by mistake. I know that sometimes it takes some time to show withdrawals deducted from your account but I had no idea that my balance increasing could possibly be a mistake. That increase was active in my account for an entire day before they took it back out. I didn't really think it being an error was possible.

Does their online interface show all debits and credits to the account? Maybe you can print out a copy of that, take it in and show the manager of the bank and ask him to remove the overdraft. I think from that, it would be pretty clear that you thought the money was yours, especially if it was in there for 24 hours.

I don't believe they are denying what happened. They are saying that it's perfectly normal and I should keep track better.

My sister is a personal banker there, and she has told me that they strive to have the best customer service. If you go in and speak with a personal banker they should straighten this out for you assuming you haven't left anything out of your story. There are laws they have to abide by, and in this climate, they will do anything to avoid even the appearance of skirting the law.

fail...maybe you should put more though in faith since it's your signature line.

I am sure any bank wouldn't mind you pulling all your overdrafting charges.
