Bank of England recalls defective £5 notes

The new design of 5-pound note launched amongst a barrage of publicity last Tuesday, is being recalled due to problems with the serial numbers. Link

Insurance broker Steve Hedges, 24, of Formby, Liverpool, told the Daily Mirror the [serial] number wiped off in his hands.
He said: "At first the number smudged, then it vanished. There was no ink left on my hands."

The new note was introduced to enhance security - it features a hologram represenation of a £5, a woven platinum strip, security inks, and special security markings visible only under UV light.

How do you screw up that much? I could see the numbers already being smeared comming off the printing press, but for anyone not to notice that the serial numbers wiped right off when you touched them?

It looks horrible. I would at least make my currency look nice.
