Well, my old bank decided to start charging ATM withdrawal fees, regardless of whos ATM you use, even theirs. So, I'm kissing them goodbye.

I own shares in Bank of America (BAC) and one is about a mile from my home, so I was thinking that to be a logical bank to take my busienss to.

IOh, so what's the deal wit hATM withdrawals?

is there a question there? do you want to know BoA's ATM policies?

i'm a BoA account holder, not by choice (well it is now, i've chosen to stay with them) but the bank i was with (fleet) got bought out by BoA.

they seem ok so far.

I've heard not-so-great things about BoA. I'm a BankOne/Chase account holder (originally with BankOne but they were bought by Chase) and can't say enough good things about 'em.

Pretty much the same as most corporate banks.

Same bank ATM = no fees

Use another banks ATM = DOUBLE fees
Your bank charges you fees
The other bank charges you fees as well

Usually $3 ($1.50 x 2) per withdrawal.

i got rid of bank of america a few months ago. when they were nationsbank they were great, but after the takeover service just went downhill. they closed all the close branches because they were near krogers (which have banking centers in the store, not much help if you're trying to make a deposit with two kids and don't want to drag them into the store). doing my banking with regions now, much happier.

One exception to "Other Banks change you fees" is Washington Mutual - then only BoA will charge you.

That is the only downside of using my credit union: ATM fees. There are a few of my credit union ATMs in the area, but not near enough to serve all of DFW. However in regards to everything else, my credit union charges very few fees not to mention the customer service is just awesome.

I have heard nothing but bad things about Bank of America when you are just a regular Joe Sixpack - seems as if small business people do pretty well with them, though. Or so I've heard.

I love my credit union because they belong to the co-op network which gives me access to almost 20,000 ATMs throughout the USA and Canada.

Bank of America has been great to me.. Their online website is great, their customer service is great, and they have no problem reversing overdraft charges.
Another benefit is that they automatically put in $500 when I deposit a check, before anything clears. I'm not sure if thats the rule for all new customers, as I have been a customer for around 10 years now. A lot of banks won't credit you anything until it clears.

RossMAN, if you would, tell me why you think federal credit unions are better than banks?

Ofcourse you are happy. Anything was better than Fleet Bank. Fleet Bank loved charging customers for every transaction possible.

I've been with BofA for 10 years. My family has been with them for a very long time. We have had zero problems with them.

Mu CU is a member also, plus they give me two free off network transactions every month. If I'm in a pinch, I can always find a WAMU that doesn't charge.

Searched my archived posts for credit union and RossMAN. In one of my posts I gave several reasons.

CU's aren't for everyone though. If you use ATM's a lot and exclusively internet banking you should go with a larger corporate bank, just for convenience.

Thanks for reminding me about that. My CU offers five free off network ATM withdrawals per month. I rarely use the ATM though. If I need cash I'll get it while shopping at the grocery store using the POS terminal. There's $0 transaction fee :)
