I used to be able to get through in 3-4 minutes, now I wait on hold for 15-20 minutes for my checking account, only to now be waiting on hold for an additional 45 minutes to talk to someone about my credit card. Wow, they used to be so much better about this crap.

You know what, I was just talking to my father about this the other night. Apparently there was a discrepency about his Bank of America credit card. He called them up and he told me he waited for 20 minutes, and after finally getting through, he spoke to a woman who then transferred him to her supervisor. The supervisor apparently hung up on my dad. He's cancelling his credit card with them, and Im considering cancelling my BOA card as well just because.

I'm trying to do a balance transfer online.

When you do it, it comes back saying "Were sorry, but were having technical difficulties with our Balance Transfer site." Then it tells me to call.

Online banking FTL.

thats odd, I just called them last week about a discreptancy with my online banking. I was on hold for 3 minutes, and a lady picked up and helped me out. 3 days later, my account has been credited back the discreptancy.
I guess YMMV

My theory is that incoming calls are processed through a system which looks up the calling phone number in a database.

Good and/or important customer = routed to someone quickly.
Others or unrecognized number = get in line.

It's just their way of showing you how important (or not) you are to them.

I know a certain wireless company did that while I worked there (2000-2005). I don't knew if they continue the practice or not.

Bank of America is very YMMV. Personally, I've never had any problems in calling customer service.

Wachovia wait is usually less than 60 seconds.

Agreed. Wachovia has better service, both on the phone and at the local branch (which is great, coz my local branch deals mainly with college kids).

Particularly bad news for MBNA customers. They used to have excellent service before being swallowed by BA.

When I had to call Citibank about my CC, I was on hold for under 60 seconds, and when I had a problem with my checking account, it was within 2-5 minutes that my call was answered.
