Bang for your buck Video Card for Gaming

My computer blew up, and when I say that I mean the X800PRO VIVO card that so many people bought to overclock, finally crapped out on me. No wonder they disabled those extra 4 pipes. Well now I'm looking to replace it. I don't really game all that much and I just bought a laptop so I'm short on cash, but since the laptop (tablet pc) I bought has integrated graphics (blech) I'd still like a nice video card when I do get in the mood to play games. I'm looking for an AGP card, and have looked at the X850XT, and the X1600XT cards, anything in that price range / performance from the nVidia side of things? I have no preference to vendor.

A GeForce 7600GS should be in that price range, and they are exellent performers for the price.

Fixed. woops.

Wow. The first THREE replies didn't read the OP. He is looking for an AGP card.

Pick up a 6800 Ultra from FS/FT.

Yup...OP, the cards you listed are good as well. You can check out also the X800gto (unlocked to 16 pipes and you'll have an X850XT) and 7600GS

That refurb X800XL is the best deal in AGP. It's notably cheaper than a 7600GS and it usually performs better.

X800XL and X850XT will give you more fps, but the 7600gs is passively cooled and has SM3 and HDR.

No clue where the 6800 falls in

None of the 7600GS AGP cards (all 2 of them) are passivley cooled at Newegg, although there was a PCIE card that was passive. The X800XL is a very good deal. This card was the one that was almost as fast as the 7800GT back in the day. It is also generally faster than the 6800 Ultra in every game but Doom3 and a few other games.

Or if you wana go really cheap, get the 6800xt, isnt that great, just a 6600gt with a 256 bit memory bus and with 256mb of ram. oc's good too. or get the 6800gs and unlock it into a 6800gt, and oc it to 6800 ultra levels 🙂

The X800XL has 16 pipes. The X850Pro has only 12, but is clocked faster. Here's a list

Chip.............. .............Pipelines............ Graphics Core....... Memory Speed
.............................................................Frequency
Radeon X800 R430 ...........12 .........................400 MHz................ 350 MHz
Radeon X800 Pro R423......12..........................475 MHz................. 450 MHz
Radeon X800 XL R430.......16......................... 400 MHz................. 500 MHz
Radeon X800 XT R423.......16......................... 500 MHz................. 500 MHz
Radeon X800 XT PE 423 ....16......................... 520 MHz................. 560 MHz
Radeon X850 Pro R480.......12.........................520 MHz..................540 MHz
Radeon X850 XT R480........16.........................520 MHz................. 540 MHz
Radeon X850 XT PE R480....16........................ 540 MHz................. 590 MHz

Radoen X800 GTO...............12........................400 Mhz...................490 Mhz

It's probably a wash speed-wise between the X800XL and X850Pro, but the X850XT will be faster than both, but hard to find in AGP.

In short, for $150 you're not going to get anything that's much faster than what you already had!

I would have bought the x850 crossfire card for $139 it's capable of x850 XTPE speeds because it has to be able to run with them.

he's limited to agp ports 😛 anyways...

and yeah, it's nice to have a CF card paired with an inexpenisive x850xt/pe.
