Bandwith Controller

Has anyone here ever used Bandwith Controller? Basically you can control how much bandwith is used by each computer on your network. I'm planning on installing a wireless network and want to control the downstairs comp from eating all the bandwith (1 word: Kazaa). $50 is steep...but it sounds worth it...

I was thinking as a cheap alternative, can't I lower the Rwin for the other computer on the network? Wouldn't that affect both the downloading and uploading of the other computer? Hmm....

If you could provide links to these threads, I would appreciate it. I already tried searching for them before I created the thread but came up with nothing.

A router is basically a function. I have a router at home, but it happens to be an old POS Dell. 😉

Now, on to the meat. 😀

Why spend anything on software like this when there have been free alternatives for years? Linux's Netfilter has QoS options. OpenBSD's PF has been integrating ALTQ (which works on a variety of platforms I believe). Both of these options can give you basic bandwidth control as well as providing some of the best firewalling software on the planet and promoting open source (linux) or free (BSD) software. Is it as simple as point and click and BAM you are an 3j337 networking dog? No, but what fun is that anyways?

I have no experience with Bandwidth Controller but I have usedNetlimiter for quite some time now and have nothing but praise for it.

You can limit a DL/UL based on application and it works great. I use it with Bittorrent that can hog all your bandwidth making even reading emails a pain. Now an upload wont cripple my whole net connection and yet I am still sharing. Looks quite a bit cheaper ($29.95) than Bandwidth Controller and Netlimiter doesn't require a router.

Download the experimental BT client which lets you limit your upload within the program.

NetLimiter sounds OKAY I guess...I can install it on the other computer and limit Kazaa, WinMX, Internet Explorer speeds, etc.

I'd rather limit the whole computer (eg Bandwith Controller) instead...I'm surprised these kinds of software haven't been too popular even though the demand is there.

You shouldn't be using Kazaa anyways.
