Does traffic over a local netowork count as bandwidth towards your overall monthly total? ( With you ISP )

I have a laptop with a small HDD, so play my mp3 songs off my server which can add up quick..

I use DU meter to measure overall bandwidth.. Considering i could listen to a couple hundred mp3's that can be about a gig of uploaded data..

Thanks!

No. They only care about data that actually leaves your network and goes through their routers. In fact, there's no way for them to even tell how much data is transferred across your LAN (or even if you are running a LAN behind your broadband connection point).

There IS one situation where it will count against your bandwidth. If you have two PC's directly connected to the ISP, not behind a SOHO router. Occasionally, ISP's will use multiple networks on the same wire. If your two PC's happen to get DHCP addresses on different subnets, your traffic will go up to the ISP and back again.

Open up a DOS prompt and run IPCONFIG - If your default gateway is the same on both computers it's bad news. If the default gateway is the same on both computers, you are fine. Chances are 99% that you're OK, but this CAN happen.

If you have a PC for a router/firewall you could probably monitor the traffic yourself just to be sure of your usage. Harder to do than a standalong/SOHO router, but if you really are worried about the traffice you might consider this as an option.

There is an app I use called Bandwidth Monitor Pro which will keep track of some daily/weekly/annual network up/down stats for you. You could install that on your PCs and watch them that way. Of course it will include all internal traffic as well, but it's something to consider.

Cheetah i use DU meter and it gives me the exact same totals, i know what is going throught daily, weekly and monthly...

Garrion, I'm behind the router and my gateway is the same, it should be correct?

Yes, if you're behing a router the only thing that counts towards your bandwidth quota is that which goes to the Internet, not things between your two PC's.
