Bandwidth issues with DSL sharing

Currently my roommate and I are sharing a DSL line through a simple hub. Both of us use PPoE to connect to the modem through the hub. This is great, no extra configuring or headaches. However, this method seems to have horrible results if we're both using bandwdith-intensive applications.

Situation: Roommate is downloading MP3s or movies.
I'm playing some online game, like CS or Serious Sam Co-op.

There seems to be no priority in bandwidth distribution. One process seems to inevitably eat up most of the bandwidth we have.
Ideally I'd like to split the connection in 2 equal streams, so neither of us can screw the other over, causing slow dl times, or high pings.

What's the best way to do this? We're contemplating getting Sygate's Home Network 4, but we're not sure if it will distribute bandwidth equitably. Would a cheap router (Barricade?) also stop bandwidth monopolization? A software solution would be ideal.

Thanks!

It's not likely you're going to find anything in the consumer market that will help you. Class-of-service/quality of service and policing are features usually only found on commercial grade switches (the "more expensive" end of commercial switches).

The person using the better NIC will usually "win" the most bandwidth. Speed of the PC, protocol, and O/S are also factors.

lets not forget that FTP and the nature of TCP windowing will tend to consume most of the bandwidth and starve out your interactive gaming session.

You could be really mean and change his MTU to 264 bytes and TCP window to 200. that would help?? 🙂

then again, he'd be cursing so loud because his internet is so slow that you wouldn't be able to concentrate on fraggin😀

Well, I've got Home Network 4.0 up, using the Single NIC technology. So nice not to have to have two adapters in my gateway computer for routing.

I'll see if it's any better at bandwidth throttling then the default setup.

Apparently Sygate's Office Network advertises bandwith/QoS capabilities. Does anyone have experience with this?
