The Mars Volta. In fact it's a straight progression. Deloused in the Comatourium<Frances The Mute<Amputecture<The Bedlam in Goliath

It's really funny, I was considering this because the more time I spend with the recent albums, the more I love them and appreciate them. I haven't spent enough time with Bedlam to make that assertion completely, but it was definitely one I was pondering.

KT

I'm talking about minute amounts of betterness, but betterness none the less. It's not as if any of those albums is in any way bad, but after 3-4 listens I have always come to the conclusion that successive new album is better than the last.

I'll take a stab at this one

Incubus
Disturbed
The Roots
Outcast

Hmm... The Roots, maybe throughout their first three albums. Outkast is tough to say. Southernplayalistikcadillacmuzik was VERY good. A classic, even. However, each album is SO different that it's tough to pin one as the best. ATLiens is very good, Aquemini is amazing, but I wouldn't say they're better.

Never really listened to Incubus or Disturbed.

I never liked Outkast's first and second albums all that much, I thought they really fell into their element with the third album and beyond (especially production wise). I think the Roots really improved over their first album with Do You Want More, Illadelph Halflife was equally good as well. But when they got to Things Fall Apart they really hit their stride (in fact a lot of fans think they peaked at that point). Their albums post TFA have all been very creatively diverse, they seem to have hit a really consistent creative groove.

WTF?!?!?!

edit: this is more sinful than even Blink or Outkast

Outkast was really kind of a typical Atlanta/southern rap duo on their first album. That's not to say they were bad, but they just were'nt great. On Atliens they started to shine a bit more, Andre really started to develop his personality and the lyrics he's well known for. And like I mentioned in the previous post, by the time they released their third album they were doing music unlike any other rap group on the scene.

I like some of A7x's old stuff. Sure there's a lot of screaming, but once you get past that there's good rythm and beat behind it. "We come out at night" for example. But most people won't make it past all of the yelling so I guess I can't really fault them for thinking their newer stuff is better.

Of course, it would be a much more fun argument if we cut it in half...

# The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967)
# A Saucerful of Secrets (1968)
# Soundtrack from the Film More (1969)
# Ummagumma (1969)
# Atom Heart Mother (1970)
# Meddle (1971)
# Obscured by Clouds (1972)

vs

# The Dark Side of the Moon (1973)
# Wish You Were Here (1975)
# Animals (1977)
# The Wall (1979)
# The Final Cut (1983)
# A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987)
# The Division Bell (1994)

If we do it that way, then I would agree that the 2nd half is better.

That's the argument, I think. Except Meddle and Obscured by clouds should be included with the second half. Meddle marks that solid transition point into the glory years. They were touring early DSoTM for the second set of their Meddle tour.

besides, Meddle is a fantastic album. I have a few friends that prefer it above all their other work.

Meddle through The Wall = WIN though I do like to give the earlier stuff a spin every now and then too. Post The Wall, I still enjoy the music but don't really consider those discs to be Pink Floyd as they were before...

I generally liked the Red Hot Chili Peppers' later stuff more than their early stuff. Sounds less punkish, more rockish and smooth.

I'd say they peaked midway and are slowly bottoming out. 'Light Grenades' and 'A Crow Left of the Murder' were Meh, but 'Morning View' is their best album in my opinion. I'm partial to 'Make Yourself', but I'd take 'Fungus Amongus' over their last release.

Post-Wall I think they sound like any other 80's band.

I'll take Fungus over any of their others, so for me, this band is not included in any better over time category.

Also, debateable, but Genesis. As a band they grew together as well. That's not to say I'd ever choose Phil Collins over Peter Gabriel, but even with Gabriel, they got better from their early 70's music before he left. And with collins they continued to grow (even if it wasn't as genius as with gabriel and was more pop.)

I have to disagree on both.

Regatta De Blanc, Outlandos D'Amour, Zenyatta > Ghosts, Synch

And Peter Gabriel fronting Genesis was the band's pinnacle, not their commercial pinnacle, but their artistic pinnacle. See Supper's Ready for more info.

Um, the Police had a 5-6 year run. They, IMO, peaked at Zenyatta and failed at Synchronicity, or as I liked to call it, Commercialicity.

3rd album the best
2nd album second best
1st album third best
4th album 4th best
5th album worse

To me, each of outkasts first 3 were downright classic in their own right. and, similar to weezer(well, first two for them), they were very original in their sound. The stuff since then has been just as original, but to me it just hasnt been all that great.

i would mark stankonia as the beginning of the second half of their career. an ok album, and better than everything after it, but in no way better than the first three.

I like their whole collection, but even going from Sounding the Seventh Trumpet to Waking the Fallen, there's a huge improvement.

Umphrey's McGee.
They've only melted my face harder since I began listening to them about 4 years ago (they started in '98).

Kings of Leon

Listen to their 2nd album, then listen to their most recent. Night and day....
