Bandai was Cheating??

while perusing some of the other forums of our competitors, looking at their lame excuses for Team Anadtech whipping then in D2OL..I saw that Little White Dog had lost Bandai aka motorboat...checking seti@home..seems he was caught in the cheating scandal...as he no longer shows up on the top user stats, last I recall he had over 400k WU's.

Kinda glad he left Broadband reports before all this hit...would of been a shame for that team to get caught up in all this. I always did wonder how one person could churn out 6000 WU's...

Unless you happen to be running SETI on a prerelease version of that Cray supercomputer with those thousands of AMD Opterons in it, there's no way on earth that you could put out that many WUs. I'd kind of had that suspicion for a while, but then I'm not familiar enough with WU times, and since I do enough math at school, I've never really taken the time to figure out if it is feasable to do that many WUs in one day. 🙂

and so have i, although i did give him the benefit of the doubt...now we know. sad really.

Gee - now there's one for the presses.

At first I bought the line about all of the servers at hand(and the pics) but later, I really started to think about it and started running some numbers and there's just no way that any company would be allowing that much computer power to go idle for as long and often as it did. 🙁

Tho lets look at the upside of it:

If it wasn't for his extreme output, would the TeAm be where it is today? He put the flame under us, and really set our ass on fire!

I do feel sorry for Little White Dog, that it had to happen to them, no team deserves that crap, and they have to take the wrap for Bandai being on their team when he was discovered 🙁

Confused

I wondered who got caught as I moved up a few spot while not submitting any WUs due to my cable modem problem. So, Bandai was not the only one removed yesterday. Keep up the great work SETI HQ!

That was disturbing as many people have seen the SGI machine pics they were running over there. Obviously greed kicked in and padded the numbers, they would been impressive with that CPU fire power without adding to it.

:frown: 🙁

No big shock to me really. I've discussed my suspicions about Bandai's production in PM's to some TA members but never mentioned it publicly.

In the end Bandai was just another cheating freaking loser. Enjoy the back of the line biatch!

Robor, I haven't checked our class lately, a couple had jumped out in front of you rather quickly which is just about impossible, anything happening there yet?

There was a post by Bandai apologizing to BBR on their forum and I was going to give you a link but it appears to have been pulled.

There are still other accounts that will fall. :Q 😉

Actually more than the machine power, the biggest obstacle to that type of production is bandwidth. I approached a University that is my client about running Seti. The tech director didn't have any problem with it until we figured out the bandwidth that would be involved. With 700-800+ Athlon XP systems plus another few hundred Duron systems we would have been looking at production at or above 6K a day. He tried Seti on the machines and had some people work on them while it was running and they really didn't have any problems with them. They use Eudora not Outlook so there was no problem there.

When we put pen to paper though on the amount of bandwidth it used, we figured there was no way they could do it on every machine and still maintain enough bandwidth for their needs. So the plan was to scale down to a smaller size, but when we approached the Chancellor of the University about the whole deal he decided he didn't want to do it at this time. 🙁 I still check in on it from time to time and before anyone asks, I asked about running other projects as well. It is going to take some more convincing to get the Chancellor's okay, but the Tech Director and I haven't given up 🙂

No shock to me, most of these huge producers were cheating. I could never buy the fact that some company or school out there would allow running seti on 1000's of PC's. Not that the client is trouble but....Crazee brings up one BIG point....BANDWIDTH!

I think both members at the top of our class are legit. They've been ahead of me for a while and outproducing me slightly. I haven't noticed any huge jump lately but it may have happened earlier. I didn't pay much attention to the class early on.

I did notice I jumped up 6 spots recently. I was 146 a couple days ago and I'm 140. 🙂

The guy in charge of all of the computer science machines runs seti on them at my university. They are running unix and I don't think many people know about it. I always wondered why my cpu usage was 100%, so I finally looked up the show processes command and found seti running. I'd say he has at least 500 machines plus servers under his command. All of them are at least 500 mhz with some up to 2.4ghz.

He might just dump at night to avoid clogging up the network.

Wanna get him to join TA? 😉

Yeah, what Confused said about joining TA. 🙂

And thanks to CkG here is the link to the BBR thread where Bandai apologizes. He got mixed reviews. :Q
