I've seen this as decoration all over the place lately as a table decoration in some restaurants, and as a stake for Orchids in some flower shops.
What species of bamboo is it?

Is it bright green, about 1cm thick and somtimes curled at the top?

Lucky bamboo. It's really popular here in Atlanta as well.

Yeah. Lots of folks know what I'm talking about.
But, in order to do some research and price comparisons, I assume I need to know the species name.
But, whenever I ask waiters and waitresses the species name, they don't like it much.

It's not bamboo at all, but its "street name" is lucky bamboo. As far as I can see, it's a weed from Taiwan. Some dude in Taiwan is cursing up a storm as he rips the crap out of his garden, meanwhile his next door neighbor his grabbing the stalks out of the trash and mailing them to his brother in the US who is selling said weeds at a gargantuan profit.

The American dream at work.

I have a bunch of the stuff...it grows very well in my 2.5gal betta fish tanks. Lots of fertilizer, I guess.
People pay insane money for them....I got 3 2" stalks for $1 not too long ago, and a few 6" stalks for about $4. Some places sell them for like $14 or more depending on the size/shape of the stalk.

Edit: the scientific name is Dracaena sanderana. Most people should recognize lucky bamboo.

Lots of pseudo-upscale home deco shops carry it around here. It's actually pretty nice to have in your house as it does produce nice leaves from the top of the stalks and is perfectly happy in just water (no soil).

If you want to pay less than premium prices for it (it's gouge-o-rama now that it's "trendy") find your local chinese market and see if they have any. Many of the Buford highway markets (for you fellow atlantans) carry this BTW.

I assume the mark up is tremendous.
Somebody will sell that stuff to me for basically free plus shipping.

We have about two acres of thick(some about 5") bamboo on our land, don't use it nor sell it, looks cool though.

It makes good fishing poles. I caught a five pound catfish on a cane pole once.

On the low, I found some wholesale for 8 cents a piece

we were going to do that, but the only fishing we really do is stripers and Reds.

We do use it occasionaly as a push rod, for shallows.

Didn't you already say someone would send it to you for basically the cost of shipping?

<< never knew there was more then on species of bamboo. you learn something new everyday. >>
