Sorry about that one - mine is all of 15 mins from me. Yeah saw these on-sale Sunday at microcenter. Was going for the I5-750, but with them selling the I7-860 at $229 - hell of a deal!

With a gigabyte ga-p55m-ud4 at $150 and 4GB DDR3 at under $70 shipped this is a serious option finally. $400 for the powertrain isnt out of reach and these are smokin fast. Nice.

The i5 processor is $30 cheaper at MicroCenter, but the motherboard, RAM, and hard drives I looked at were all $10 higher than NewEgg, so if I were to buy all 4 items from the same place, then the total would be the same.

Too bad MicroCenter doesn't have a great prices on all 4 items, so I could drive there (about 30 minutes) and buy everything I need at once.

Look at the review on the anandtech main page, also the boards for the i5 are available for as little as $99 ($79 with a rebate if it comes through) although I am waiting to see where they fall out and who has the best board in the $125-$150 range and they will take a little time. However I think one of these will be in my praetorian by the time the turkey is on the table :).

I can't decide between the 750 for $179 or the 860 for $229. Is the performance gain worth the $50?

Dude, if you are going to keep this system for 2 years, that is 25/yr or .07/day. For that you get hyperthreading and out of the box performance just slightly lower than the 1000.00 chip. On the other hand, if all you do is surf and email, you probably don't even need to upgrade at all.

I'll mainly be looking for performance for gaming in which the FPS difference isn't that great between the two right now, but I wonder about load times and gaming down the road in a couple years. Also, who knows, I may be looking at doing more video stuff in the future.

you're complaining about an hour drive? my nearest is 6 hrs and I get there once a year. In about 2 months one opens in St Louis, MO, 90 minutes away. I can't freaking wait.

IIRC the i7s weren't THAT huge of an upgrade over an overclocked 9550, unless you need every bit of power.

So why are you pissing and moaning?????? The savings alone in the cost of the cpu will pay for gas. Damn go out there take a look around for an hour or so, pick up the cpu. Now do lunch some where and drive home.

Where at in STL? That's awesome news since it'll put one within 45 min max of me even if it's on the south side.
