This isn't a surprise. Almost everyone I talked to said 24 hour Fitness was horrible. Dirty locker room and too many people packed inside a stuffy gym.

24 hours is part of Bally, right??

Sadly, in fatty Michigan, there isn't too much else...Powerhouse wasn't much better since I've been with Bally's for over a year now and they offered me a month to month $28 membership. If they go under, I'll probably end up spending more money. doh.

My only gripe with the 24 Hour Fitness here is that they use polygon-shaped plates, which makes deadlifting impossible.

Gold's Gym and round plates FTW.

Honestly, whoever came up with the idea of plates in any shape other than round needs to DIAF ;)

My gripe is that they only have 160lb dumbbells. I am way beyond that.

I kid, I kid.

I went to one here to check it out, and it was like a dungeon.

Thats why I signed up for Lifetime Fitness :)

Theres always Lifetime Fitness in troy and rochester. Yes a little on the pricey side but i think their facilites are top notch. Theres also a new fitness center for $19 a month down rochester and tienken, haven't heard too much about it.

An old friend of mine's father was a big dog accountant for them. Wonder if he's out of a job.

Just an update - I did conventional deads last night and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Because the plates are covered with a really sticky rubber, they don't move very much during the lift. The worst case is you will need to reset your stance a bit between each rep. It's a little bit annoying, but I think I'll manage.

Which is pretty much my view, sometimes I need to adjust them between sets, not a really big deal.

The wife bought a membership at Richard Simmons 20 years ago they got bought out by Vic Tanny which then got bought out by Bally's. They just sent me a letter a couple of weeks ago with a special promotional offer. I checked online and we were good 'til like march of '08. This sucks, but at least I didn't send them anymore money.

BTW-another thing that sucked was that the membership was transferable, yearly fees were $45, so I probably could have screwed someone over and sold the membership for $500 (It cost $1500 20 years ago).
