I was in Bali, in this club, back in May. I went in, ordered a beer, but left a few minutes later. The club, and the neighborhood just struck me as a potentially unsafe place. The area where the bombimg happened was on the main road in Kuta where all of the tourists hang out. There were so many people milling around just gawking at the tourists. Being from NYC, and having grown up being VERY sensitive to my surroundings, I felt like I was viewed as a big bag of money with feet. I just had to get out of there. I felt like if just a few molecules shifted their positions, the place could become totally uncontrollable.
Other than my discomfort with Kuta and the tousisty strip, Bali was an excellent, beautiful and tranquil place. The people in Bali (overwhelmingly Bhudist--not Muslim) are peaceful, calm and religious. Most surprisingly though is that they don;t consider themselves Indonesians--they say they are Balinese. They really feel like Indonesia needs them MUCH more than they need the rest of Indonesia.
Very unfortunately, now they have just been lumped into the pool of extremists and terrorists. This is a major disaster for Bali and a big blow to any hint of stability in Indonesia. Maybe some of the big western hotel chains who have proterties in Bali, rather than just pull out, could help the people restore the calm to such a lovely place with such wonderful people.
